FAQs about Iceland tours from the USA

These questions cover practical information for US travellers planning a trip to Iceland, including flights, visas, driving, and what to expect on arrival.

The right number of days depends on what you want to see and how much ground you want to cover.

For a full Ring Road circuit, allow at least ten days, and ideally twelve to fourteen to travel at a comfortable pace. A week gives you enough time to cover the south and west, or to explore one or two regions in depth. Three to six days works well for a Reykjavík-based trip with day excursions to the Golden Circle and South Coast.

For more detail, see the 5-day Iceland itinerary guide or the article on how many days you need in Iceland.

The best month depends on what you want to see. Iceland is worth visiting year-round but summer and winter offer very different experiences.

Summer, from June through August, gives you the longest days, the most stable road conditions, and access to all regions including the highlands. The midnight sun is visible around midsummer.

Winter, from October through March, is the season for the Northern Lights, ice cave tours, and snow-covered landscapes. Days are short, particularly in December and January, but the darkness is part of what makes the aurora possible.

Spring and autumn are quieter than summer with lower accommodation prices and fewer visitors. Most main attractions remain open during these periods.

For more detail, see the guide on when to visit Iceland.

Iceland has a wide range of landscapes and activities. Some options to consider:

Iceland Tours offers several travel styles to suit different preferences.

A self-drive tour gives you a rental car and pre-planned itinerary with the flexibility to set your own pace. Route 1, known as the Ring Road, circles the entire island and is the main self-drive route.

A multi-day tour from Reykjavík is a practical option if you prefer not to drive. You stay in the city and join guided day excursions by bus to different attractions.

A guided group tour takes you around the country by bus with a local driver-guide for the full trip. This suits travellers who want local expertise and company on the road.

For more ideas, see the Iceland vacation ideas page.

Iceland has a reputation as an expensive destination, and costs can add up if you book everything separately. A package holiday simplifies budgeting by combining accommodation, transport, and daily breakfast into a single price.

All Iceland Tours packages include:

  • Accommodation

  • Local transport

  • Breakfast each morning (except on camping trips)

  • Detailed itinerary

  • Access to our 24/7 helpline on your tour

Travelling in the shoulder season of spring or autumn generally means lower accommodation prices and fewer visitors. Camping tours are one of the most affordable ways to travel through Iceland. For more tips, see the budgeting guide for Iceland.

Wi-Fi is included in your rental car and at most accommodation, so cellphone roaming charges are easy to avoid.

Yes, particularly for popular activities and guided tours. Ice cave tours, glacier walks, and whale watching excursions have limited capacity and book up quickly in peak season. Adding activities at checkout when you book your package is the most straightforward approach. If you want to add something after booking, get in touch with our team as soon as possible and we will do our best to accommodate it.

While most Icelanders speak excellent English as a second language, Icelandic is the official language. The nation’s mother tongue evolved from Old Norse, spoken by the Vikings.

So you’ll be able to communicate in English with ease at bars, restaurants and hotels. But Icelanders will appreciate it if you learn a few words of their language. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Góðan daginn (GO-than DIE-in) – Hello
  • Einn bjór, takk (EYT-n byoer, tahk) – One beer, please
  • Skál! (scowl) – Cheers!

Takk fyrir (TAHK fee-reer) – Thank you

Flights from the US are not included in our packages. This gives you the flexibility to choose your preferred airline and route. Direct flights to Keflavík International Airport operate from Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, New York, Orlando, Portland, Seattle, and Washington D.C. among other cities.

Flights from the east coast take around five and a half to six hours. From the west coast, allow around eight hours. Delta, United, Icelandair, and Play all operate routes from the US.

The main entry point is Keflavík International Airport, around 45 minutes from Reykjavík by road and close to the Blue Lagoon. Direct flights operate from multiple US cities. Book flights once your Iceland Tours package is confirmed, as your travel dates will be set at that point.

US citizens are required to have at least three months of validity remaining on their passport beyond their planned departure date from Iceland. The US Department of State recommends having at least six months of validity if you plan to visit other European countries before or after Iceland. No visa is required for US citizens visiting Iceland for up to 90 days. Check the Bureau of Consular Affairs website for the most current requirements before travelling.

Yes. US citizens with a valid US driver's licence can drive in Iceland. You must be at least 20 years old to rent a standard car, and at least 23 years old to rent a 4x4 or larger vehicle. Bring your licence when collecting your vehicle. For tips on driving conditions and road rules, see the guide to driving in Iceland.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. While your existing health plan may provide some coverage abroad, most US plans do not cover trip cancellation, flight disruption, or loss of personal belongings. A travel insurance policy covering these eventualities adds relatively little to the overall trip cost and provides financial protection if something unexpected happens.

Browse the packages on this page and filter by interest, travel style, and time of year. Once you have found the right itinerary, follow the online booking steps to secure your trip. At checkout you can customise your tour by selecting your rental car, accommodation level, and any optional excursions or extra nights.

A 5% deposit secures your booking. Flights are not included, so book those once your travel dates are confirmed.

Pack for changeable conditions regardless of season:

  • Waterproof outer layers

  • Warm insulated jacket

  • Gloves, scarf, and hat

  • Walking boots with grip

  • Swimwear for geothermal pools

  • Sunglasses

  • Moisturiser and lip balm

If you plan to photograph the Northern Lights, a tripod and spare battery pack are worth adding to your kit.

For a full year-round packing list, see the Iceland packing guide.
