Iceland volcano tours

Iceland is one of the most volcanically active places on earth. The country straddles the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and the Reykjanes peninsula alone has seen eruptions almost every year since 2021. These tours are built around that geology, taking you to places where the landscape is still being shaped.

Each package includes accommodation, transport, and a planned itinerary. You can travel on your own schedule with a self-drive tour, join a guided group, or use Reykjavík as a base and take day trips out to the volcanic sites. Add-on activities such as lava caving, a descent into Þríhnúkagígur volcano's magma chamber, or a helicopter flight over the Reykjanes eruption fields can be added at checkout.

The volcanic highlights span the whole country, from the bubbling mud pools of Krafla and the lava fields around Mývatn in the north, to Eyjafjallajökull, the Westman Islands, and the Lakagígar craters in the south.

FAQs about Iceland volcano tour packages

These questions cover what to expect on a volcano tour in Iceland, where to see volcanic activity, and how to book.

Yes. Iceland Tours offers self-drive packages, guided group tours, multi-day tours, and privately guided options that cover Iceland's main volcanic regions. The Reykjanes peninsula, south coast, and Lake Mývatn area are all accessible on these itineraries. Add-on activities including lava caving, magma chamber visits, and helicopter tours over eruption sites can be booked at checkout.

Iceland's volcanic landscapes are accessible on most self-drive and guided itineraries. Every package includes a detailed itinerary planned by our Reykjavík-based team, with accommodation, transport, and daily breakfast included.

Your vacation package will also include:

  • Your choice of accommodation level
  • A delicious daily breakfast
  • A rental car of your choice (for self-drive & camping trips)
  • 24/7 support while you’re in Iceland
  • Camping gear, including tent, sleeping bags & cooking equipment (for camping trips)
  • Airport transfers & activities (for multi-day, guided & private tours)

Iceland's volcanic regions cover a wide range of landscapes and activities. Depending on your itinerary, you could:

Depending on the tour, you might find yourself in the Reykjanes Geopark, walking on brand-new lava fields formed by recent volcanic eruptions. Or you could venture to North Iceland and explore the otherworldly Lake Mývatn, a stunning lake that sits in the middle of a lava field. You’ll see volcanic craters, hot water caves, mud pools and more.

See the guide to where to see active volcanoes in Iceland for more detail.

Most of Iceland's active volcanoes are in the south and central regions. The Reykjanes Peninsula, around 45 minutes from Reykjavík, is home to the Fagradalsfjall and Litli-Hrútur eruption sites from 2021 to 2024.

As you make your way southeast, you can visit other popular sites, like Katla, Hekla, and Eldfell. And, of course, there’s Eyjafjallajökull, an infamous volcano in Iceland. You might have heard that in 2010, its eruption sent massive ash clouds into the sky, which caused some disruption.

A great way to see these sites is on an Iceland active volcano tour following the Volcanic Way route. You’ll drive through South Iceland and the Reykjanes peninsula, stopping at 8 major volcanic attractions. To learn more about the Volcanic Way and get insider tips, check out this guide on where to see active volcanoes in Iceland.

Yes. The Lava Show in Reykjavík and Vík demonstrates live lava by heating volcanic rock to around 1100°C and pouring it in front of visitors.

During periods of active eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula, viewing has been possible from designated safe areas confirmed by Icelandic authorities.

In recent years, the eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula, including the famous Fagradalsfjall volcano, were nicknamed ‘tourist eruptions’. That’s because locals and visitors could witness the eruption from a safe distance once the Icelandic authorities deemed it safe to do so.

Alternatively, you can see solidified lava all across the country. Iceland is home to moss-covered lava fields like Eldhraun and cooled lava formations like Dimmuborgir.

Most of Iceland’s volcanoes are safe to visit unless local authorities say otherwise. You can explore some of them on your own by hiking along crater rims or across lava fields.

For other experiences, like going into a magma chamber, you’ll need to join a guided tour. These tours put your safety first, so you can rest assured you’re in good hands. Just make sure to always follow your guide’s advice.

That said, volcanoes can be unpredictable, so it’s always best to stay updated and follow the safety advice of Icelandic authorities. For example, if there’s an eruption happening while you’re in Iceland, stay away from the eruption area while it’s closed and respect road closures.

The only exception is guided group tours, which have fixed departures. Guided group tours have fixed departures in both summer and winter with a range of dates available throughout the year.

Confirm your tour dates first, then book flights to match. This ensures your travel dates are fixed before you commit to flights.

  • Fleece or mid-layer
  • Waterproof pants and rain jacket
  • Gloves, hat, and scarf
  • Warm underlayer socks
