Iceland has two main seasons for visiting: summer and winter, with quieter shoulder seasons in spring and autumn.

The summer months of June through August offer the warmest temperatures and the longest days, with midnight sun conditions around midsummer. All attractions and highland roads are open during this period.

Winter runs from October through March. This is the season for the Northern Lights, ice cave tours, and snow-covered landscapes.

Spring and autumn are quieter than summer. Most main attractions remain accessible and prices are generally lower than at peak times.

The thing about Iceland is that it’s great for both short and long trips. On a 4-day tour, you could explore Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and waterfalls on the south coast.

Spend 5 days to a week in Iceland and you can pack a lot more in. For instance, go further afield to West Iceland and the Snæfellsnes peninsula. You could even circle the entire Ring Road in a week.

With a longer stay of 10 days to 2 weeks, you can get to know each region more intimately and travel at a slower pace. In summer, it’s also possible to access further-flung parts of the country like the Westfjords and the central highlands.

For more detail on trip length by region and travel style, see this guide to how many days you need in Iceland.

Iceland covers a lot of ground. A practical starting point is the southwest, which is within easy reach of Reykjavík and accessible on most short itineraries.

The Golden Circle route covers Þingvellir National Park, the Strokkur geyser at Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall, all within a day's drive of Reykjavík.

From there, you can easily venture south along the coast, hitting sights like Reynisfjara black sand beach, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and Fellsfjara (Diamond Beach). To learn more about this region, read this guide to the best things to see and do on Iceland's south coast.

The Snæfellsnes peninsula is around two hours from Reykjavík and covers Kirkjufell mountain, the Snæfellsjökull glacier, and several historic fishing villages.

For longer trips, North Iceland, East Iceland, and the Westfjords offer less-visited landscapes and quieter roads.

Iceland offers a range of activities that are difficult to find elsewhere. Some options to consider:

  • Snorkel between continents at Silfra gorge
  • Ride an Icelandic horse along a black sand beach
  • Go underground and explore a lava cave
  • Snowmobile across a glacier
  • Explore an ice cave in a glacier
  • Unwind in the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon
  • Chase the Aurora Borealis under the winter sky
  • Jet around a glacier lagoon in an amphibious vehicle

For more options, see the active tours page.

It’s normally a good idea to hold off on booking flights until you’ve secured your trip package. That said, you might have already locked in a last-minute deal on flights.

All of our packages, except guided group trips, have flexible departure dates. This means that if you’ve already booked your flights, you should be able to find a package that works with your dates.

Check the specific package page for detailed info on dates, as last-minute packages tend to have limited availability.
