West & South Iceland with Snæfellsnes - 7 Days

7 days / 6 nights

Witness awe-inspiring sights across West and South Iceland on this comprehensive 7-day tour, where volcanoes, glaciers, and geysers create unforgettable landscapes. This Iceland 7-day tour combines two of the country's most spectacular regions in one small group adventure limited to 19 travelers.

Your 7-day Iceland tour begins with exploration of West Iceland's natural wonders, including Europe's most powerful hot spring at Deildartunguhver, the sapphire-blue Hraunfossar waterfalls where water streams through lava fields, and Iceland's largest lava tunnel at Víðgelmir Cave. You'll immerse yourself in Viking history at Reykholt and Húsafell, connecting with the Icelandic sagas that unfolded across these dramatic landscapes.

This Snæfellsnes small group tour dedicates an entire day to exploring the peninsula often called "Iceland in miniature." You'll marvel at glacier-capped Snæfellsjökull
volcano, spot seals on golden sand beaches, photograph the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, and discover dramatic coastal formations at Arnarstapi and Djúpalónssandur. The peninsula showcases Iceland's complete geological diversity in one accessible region.

Your 7-day Iceland tour package continues to South Iceland's legendary attractions. You'll complete the world-famous Golden Circle route with its erupting Strokkur geyser, powerful Gullfoss waterfall, and historic Þingvellir National Park. Along the spectacular South Coast, you'll witness epic waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, walk on dramatic Reynisfjara black sand beach, and marvel at icebergs floating through Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

The highlight of this Iceland west coast wonders adventure is a three-hour expedition into a natural blue ice cave deep within a glacier. These ephemeral formations exist only during winter when plunging temperatures create spectacular crystalline caves glowing in shades from sapphire blue to brilliant white.

This 7 days Iceland tour package perfectly balances West Iceland's less-crowded attractions with South Iceland's iconic highlights, providing comprehensive coverage of two spectacular regions.

For glacier activities, hiking boots are mandatory.

Staying inBorgarnes area
Driving distance200 km (124 mi)

Please be ready at your hotel by 8:30 AM when your guide arrives for pickup. This morning marks the beginning of your West Iceland tours adventure as you head out of Reykjavík toward Iceland's dramatic west coast. Just as you leave the capital, you'll pass by towering Mount Esja, the distinctive mountain visible from much of Reykjavík.

Your destination is the historic Borgarfjörður region, where many Icelandic sagas are believed to have taken place. This area is rich in Viking-age history and folklore. The first stop is Bifröst, named after the rainbow bridge from Norse mythology that connected Earth to Asgard. Here you can admire the thundering Glanni waterfall cascading over multiple tiers and three vast volcanic craters demonstrating the area's volcanic past.

A little further along, experience Iceland's incredible geothermal power at Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring. This remarkable feature pumps over 180 liters of boiling water per second at nearly 100°C (212°F). The hot water is piped up to 64 kilometers away to heat homes and greenhouses in nearby towns, showcasing Iceland's innovative use of renewable geothermal energy.

Continue to the historic village of Reykholt, the home of Snorri Sturluson, one of Iceland's greatest medieval writers. This 13th-century scholar, poet, and politician wrote the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, preserving much of what we know about Norse mythology and Icelandic history. Visit the hot spring where Snorri bathed and the tunnel he used to reach his house.

Next, visit the spectacular twin waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar creates a unique sight where water streams through countless rivulets in the Hallmundarhraun lava field, creating beautiful sapphire-blue cascades into the Hvítá river. Nearby, Barnafoss rushes through a narrow rocky gorge. Legend says the waterfall's name ("Children's Falls") comes from two children who fell in while crossing a stone bridge.

Learn about Viking history at Húsafell, a farming community surrounded by dramatic landscapes that has been inhabited since Iceland's settlement in the 9th century. The area features connections to the sagas and showcases traditional Icelandic rural life.

End your day with a guided expedition into Víðgelmir Cave (included), Iceland's largest lava tunnel at 1,585 meters (5,200 feet) long. This spectacular cave formed about 1,000 years ago when lava flowed through, leaving behind a hollow tube. Your expert guide will lead you through illuminated passages, pointing out ancient stalactites, stalagmites, and captivating ice formations that remain year-round due to the cave's constant temperature. Safety helmets and lighting are provided for this unforgettable underground adventure.

Staying inReykjavík
Driving distance400 km (249 mi)

Today your 7-day Iceland tour dedicates a full day to the spectacular Snæfellsnes peninsula, nicknamed "Iceland in miniature" because it showcases so many of Iceland's iconic natural features in one compact region. This comprehensive Snæfellsnes small group tour reveals the peninsula's incredible diversity.

The first sight that comes into view as you journey through the peninsula is Snæfellsjökull, a glacier-capped stratovolcano standing nearly 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) tall. This iconic mountain was made famous by Jules Verne's novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth," where it served as the entrance to the underground world. On clear days, Snæfellsjökull can be seen from Reykjavík, 120 kilometers away.

Stop at Ytri-Tunga, a golden sand beach where seal colonies bask on the shores. During summertime, harbor seals are particularly abundant, lounging on the rocks and swimming close to shore. These playful marine mammals are accustomed to visitors, offering excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.

Visit the iconic Búðakirkja black church, a small black wooden church set dramatically against Snæfellsjökull glacier with lava fields surrounding it. This photogenic church, originally built in 1703 and rebuilt in 1987, represents traditional Icelandic rural architecture and creates one of Iceland's most striking scenes.

Continue to Arnarstapi fishing village, a charming settlement at the foot of Snæfellsjökull. Stroll along the coastal walking path where you'll see dramatic basalt columns sculpted by thousands of years of Atlantic waves, stone arches including the famous Gatklettur ("arch rock"), and the imposing Bárður Snæfellsás sculpture. According to Icelandic folklore, Bárður was a half-troll guardian of the peninsula.

Further onwards, you'll reach the towering Lóndrangar cliffs, dramatic 75-meter (246-foot) tall volcanic rock pinnacles rising from the ocean. These basalt formations are remnants of an ancient volcanic crater and serve as summer nesting sites for puffins, fulmars, and other seabirds. The raw coastal scenery and powerful Atlantic waves create spectacular displays.

Walk along the striking black pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur, flanked by ancient lava fields and dramatic rock formations. Here you can test your strength by lifting the "strength stones" that fishermen once used to qualify for positions on fishing boats. The stones bear names reflecting different strength levels and range from 23 to 154 kilograms.

Your final stop is Kirkjufell, Iceland's most photographed mountain thanks to its distinctive pyramid shape and the picturesque Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in the foreground. This 463-meter (1,519-foot) peak gained additional fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Your guide will show you the best viewpoints for capturing this iconic West Iceland landmark.

Return to Reykjavík, where you can enjoy a mid-tour evening exploring the capital's restaurants and nightlife.

Staying inHveragerði
Driving distance210 km (130 mi)

Please be ready at your hotel by 8:30 AM when your guide arrives for pickup.

This morning, embark on an adventure around Iceland's best-known touring route, the iconic Golden Circle. You can expect incredible sights as your expert driver-guide takes you to your first stop, Þingvellir National Park.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is central to Icelandic history and geology. Walk through Almannagjá gorge where you can see the visible boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are pulling apart at about 2 centimeters per year. This is also where Iceland's ancient parliament, the Alþingi, was established in 930 AD, making it one of the world's oldest parliamentary institutions.

Continue to the Geysir geothermal area to be amazed by Strokkur geyser, which spouts boiling water and steam every 5-10 minutes, reaching heights up to 30 meters (98 feet). The surrounding area bubbles with hot springs and steaming vents, showcasing Iceland's intense geothermal activity.

From here, you'll visit the legendary Gullfoss waterfall, where the glacial Hvítá river plunges in two dramatic tiers into a rugged canyon. The name means "Golden Falls," referring to the golden hue the glacial sediment gives the water in certain light. On sunny days, rainbows often dance in the spray.

After completing the Golden Circle, you'll stop at the impressive Kerið crater, a 6,500-year-old volcanic crater known for its vibrant shades of red earth, green moss, and blue caldera lake. You can walk along the crater's rim or descend to the lake at the bottom for unique perspectives.

Toward the end of the day, you'll arrive in Hveragerði, a town famed for its geothermal energy. The town features a small geyser and many hot springs. You might enjoy a relaxing dip in the naturally heated waters at the geothermal swimming pool before heading to your accommodation.

Optional activity (no pre-booking required): Geothermal swimming pool in Hveragerði

Driving distance367 km (228 mi)

Today is all about the breathtaking beauty of South Iceland's dramatic coastline. This diverse coastal region features spectacular waterfalls, volcanic beaches, and charming fishing villages nestled beneath glaciers.

Your journey includes stops at three awe-inspiring waterfalls. First, visit the hidden Gljúfrabúi waterfall, tucked inside a narrow canyon where you can venture behind the falls through an opening in the rock. Continue to Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls where you can walk behind the 60-meter (197-foot) curtain of water on a footpath (weather and conditions permitting), experiencing the cascade from a unique perspective.

The waterfalls continue at Skógafoss, a dramatic 60-meter high waterfall where 200 cubic meters of water per second plunge into the pool below. This beautifully shaped waterfall is famous for the rainbows that often appear in its spray. Legend says Viking settler Þrasi Þórólfsson hid treasure behind the falls. If conditions allow, climb the stairs beside the waterfall for spectacular views over the South Coast.

Your final stop of the day is Reynisfjara, Iceland's most famous black sand beach. Watch powerful waves crashing against dramatic volcanic formations including the towering Reynisdrangar basalt columns rising from the ocean. According to folklore, these formations are trolls who were turned to stone by sunlight. The cathedral-like basalt column cliffs create a striking atmosphere. Be cautious of powerful "sneaker waves" that can surprise visitors.

Continue through sweeping coastal landscapes with views of farms nestled beneath glaciers, arriving at your accommodation near Höfn, a charming fishing town known for its langoustine and stunning glacier views.

Staying inReykjavík
Driving distance412 km (256 mi)

Another day of spectacular sights awaits on your 7-day Iceland tour! Journey further east to Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland's largest national park covering almost 14% of the country and containing Europe's largest glacier.

Your first stop is Fellsfjara, nicknamed Diamond Beach. Chunks of ice that have drifted from nearby Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon wash up on the black volcanic sand, sparkling like diamonds against the dark shore. These ice pieces range from small fragments to massive boulders, creating constantly changing ice sculptures.

Close by is the picturesque Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, one of Iceland's most iconic locations. Massive icebergs that have calved from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier float on calm waters in shades of brilliant white, electric blue, and black (from volcanic ash). Some icebergs can be hundreds of years old, and seals often swim among them.

Get ready for a rush of adrenaline as you embark on a three-hour expedition into a natural blue ice cave deep within a glacier. You'll board a super jeep for an exciting ride across glacial terrain to reach this extraordinary natural wonder. The sunlight streaming through ancient ice tinges it blue, creating an otherworldly atmosphere with colors ranging from deep sapphire to crystalline white.

These caves are ephemeral formations that exist only during winter months when fresh water freezes into spectacular structures. Each season brings new caves as the glacier shifts, making your visit truly unique and unrepeatable. Your experienced guides will lead you to the most stunning formations, explaining the glacial processes that create these natural wonders.

As you head back to Reykjavík, stop at Hofskirkja, a charming turf-roofed church, one of Iceland's last remaining examples of traditional architecture. Continue through the striking Eldhraun lava field, a massive moss-covered expanse created by the catastrophic Laki eruption of 1783-1784.

Our guided group tours have fixed start dates and itineraries. While it’s not possible to customize the actual tour, you can tailor your trip with extra days and activities before or afterwards.

For example, you could add a couple more days in Reykjavík at the end of your trip. Fill these with day tours or exciting activities like ice caving and snowmobiling.

On a guided group tour, you’ll learn a lot about Icelandic history, nature, and culture from experienced tour guides. You’ll find their passion for the country infectious and gain a perspective on life in Iceland from these travel experts.

Guided group tours also mean you don’t need to worry about driving yourself on unfamiliar roads. They’re a fantastic way to explore Iceland if you want to meet like-minded travelers too.

That said, guided tours are by no means the only way to experience Iceland. If you’d prefer something more customizable, you could go for a multi-day tour by bus. Or if you want to set your own pace on a road trip, it’s hard to beat a self-drive tour.

Another option is a privately guided tour. This combines the experience of a locally guided tour with the intimacy of traveling in your own private group.

On an Iceland guided tour, you can expect to travel by bus in a small or large party. You can choose your preferred group size when you book.

Iceland small group tours are more intimate, whereas standard group tours are more wallet-friendly. The maximum number of people in a small group is 16, and 36 in a standard group.

Your driver-guide will lead the entire trip, which includes stays in the Icelandic countryside. Each day you’ll explore a new part of Iceland and enjoy commentary from your guide between stops.

As you’ll be with the same group of people throughout your trip, you’ll have the chance to socialize with fellow travelers and make friends (maybe even for life). There’s nothing like diving into Iceland’s epic nature for a bonding experience!

All of the guided Iceland vacation packages featured here include local transport, accommodation, breakfast, airport transfers, and activities. Some also include dinners in the countryside, so check the specific package for details.

You can customize your guided trip with extra days in Reykjavík at the start or end of your vacation. Use these to pack in day tours or an evening Northern Lights tour. You could even pay a relaxing visit to the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon.

In general, tipping is not as commonplace in Iceland as in some other countries. While tour guides would never expect to be tipped, they would receive them gratefully.

You can start planning your Iceland adventure right on this page. Browse the guided vacation packages above until you find the one for you.

Next, check departure dates on the tour page. Guided group tours have fixed dates and durations, although you can extend your trip with extra days in Reykjavík if you like. This would be your chance to add activities, like exploring an ice cave or bathing in hot springs.

After that, simply follow the checkout instructions to complete your booking. You’ll receive a confirmation email straight away, followed by your travel documents closer to your departure date.

You can check dates on the individual tour pages. Guided tours are available in a small or large group, with separate departure dates for each.

There are weekly or fortnightly departures throughout the popular summer and winter seasons. Make sure you book in advance as spaces can sell out quick.

Because guided group tours have fixed departure dates, it’s a good idea to book your vacation package before your flights. Once you’ve received the confirmation from Iceland Tours, you’re clear to book with your preferred airline.

That said, you might want to do a rough check for flights before you book your package to get a feel for what’s available.

Iceland is well connected to Europe and North America with daily direct flights to lots of major cities.

When visiting Iceland, it pays to pack smart and be prepared. The weather is changeable and conditions are likely to be different to what you’re used to at home.

Here’s an Iceland packing list that’s good for all seasons:

  • Warm, waterproof coat
  • Toasty inner layers
  • Hat, scarf, and gloves
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Sunglasses
  • Moisturizer and lip balm

There’s plenty to enjoy on a guided tour of Iceland. The great thing about them is that you can access locations you never would have known about. And you can travel to seemingly out-of-reach regions, like the Icelandic highlands.

Here’s just some of what you could get up to on an Iceland group tour:

These two completely different cave types showcase Iceland's diverse geological forces, from volcanic activity to glacial processes, providing unforgettable underground adventures.

You'll see Iceland's most famous attractions (Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón, South Coast waterfalls) plus explore the magical Snæfellsnes peninsula and West Iceland's hidden gems that many first-time visitors miss. Yes! This guided tour is perfect for solo travelers. You'll join other adventurers from around the world, making it easy to connect with fellow travelers throughout the 7 days. The small group size (maximum 19 people) creates a friendly, social atmosphere.
