Staying inVík area (dinner included)
Driving distance485 km (301 mi)

This morning, your expert guide will pick you up from your hotel in a comfortable minibus to begin your Ring Road highlights tour. Your first destination is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This dramatic rift valley also served as the meeting place of Iceland's ancient parliament, established in 930 AD.

Continue to the Geysir geothermal area, where the mighty Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes, shooting boiling water and steam up to 30 meters (98 feet) into the air. The surrounding area bubbles with hot springs and steaming vents, creating a truly otherworldly landscape.

Next, you'll visit Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls. The glacial Hvítá river plunges in two dramatic tiers into a rugged canyon, creating a thunderous display of nature's power. On sunny days, rainbows often dance in the spray.

In the afternoon, continue along the beautiful South Coast. You'll visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the 60-meter (197-foot) cascade on a footpath for a unique perspective. Nearby, Skógafoss waterfall impresses with its perfect rectangular shape and immense power. Legend says Viking settler Þrasi Þórólfsson hid treasure behind the falls.

Visit Reynisfjara black sand beach before continuing to your accommodation in the Vík area. Here you'll enjoy dinner with your small group (included), sharing stories from your first day exploring Iceland's Ring Road.

Staying inHöfn area (dinner included)
Driving distance300 km (186 mi)

Today you'll discover the icy side of the Land of Fire & Ice. Start at stunning Skaftafell Nature Reserve, part of vast Vatnajökull National Park. Take time to explore the area's diverse landscapes, from birch woodlands to glacial tongues descending from Iceland's largest ice cap.

Continue to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, one of Iceland's most spectacular natural wonders. This deep glacial lagoon fills with icebergs that have calved from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. The constantly changing ice sculptures drift through the 180-meter (591-foot) deep lagoon in shades of brilliant white and electric blue. You'll board a guided amphibian boat for a tour among the massive icebergs, getting up close to these ancient ice formations.

A short distance from Jökulsárlón, you'll visit Diamond Beach, where chunks of ice wash up on the black sand shore after drifting out to sea. The contrast between sparkling ice and dark volcanic sand creates magical scenes, especially in the golden light of summer evenings. This is a photographer's paradise.

After your day of glacial exploration, you'll stop for some delicious homemade ice cream before continuing to your accommodation in Höfn, a charming fishing town known for its langoustine. Enjoy dinner with your group at your hotel (included).

Staying inMývatn area (dinner included)
Driving distance515 km (320 mi)

Your Ring Road journey continues along Iceland's dramatic east coast, home to stunning fjords, cute fishing villages, and sweeping mountain landscapes. The Eastfjords region offers some of Iceland's most pristine and least-visited scenery. Watch for reindeer grazing on mountain slopes, the only wild land mammals native to Iceland (introduced in the 18th century).

Once you reach North Iceland, prepare to be amazed by Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall. The massive volume of glacial water from Vatnajökull crashes 45 meters (148 feet) into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon with tremendous force, creating spray visible from kilometers away. The thunderous roar and raw power of Dettifoss exemplifies Iceland's untamed nature.

You'll then make your way to the otherworldly landscape of Lake Mývatn, where you'll spend the night. This area showcases Iceland's volcanic forces through bizarre lava formations, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents. The lake itself teems with bird life during summer months.

End your evening with a group dinner at your accommodation (included), sharing impressions from your journey through Iceland's remote eastern and northern regions.

Staying inSkagafjörður area (dinner included)
Driving distance244 km (152 mi)

Spend the morning exploring Lake Mývatn's extraordinary volcanic landscape. Visit Námaskarð pass, where sulfuric steam rises from bubbling mud pools and hissing fumaroles in vivid shades of orange, yellow, and white. The otherworldly scene feels like visiting another planet.

Explore Dimmuborgir, a labyrinth of dramatic lava pillars and volcanic caves formed 2,000 years ago when a lava lake collapsed. Icelandic folklore claims this dark maze is where trolls and hidden people dwell. Walk through the towering formations on well-maintained paths.

Before continuing to Akureyri, your guide will take you to Goðafoss, the horseshoe-shaped "Waterfall of the Gods." The name comes from the legend that in the year 1000, when Iceland officially converted to Christianity, the local lawspeaker threw his pagan idols into the falls.

In Akureyri, you'll have free time to explore this charming town center, full of historic 20th-century buildings, boutique shops, and cozy cafés. Visit the striking Akureyrarkirkja church, browse local art galleries, or simply enjoy coffee with a view of Eyjafjörður fjord. You'll also have the chance to experience the idyllic Forest Lagoon geothermal baths, surrounded by birch and pine trees.

Continue to Skagafjörður, an area famous for its abundance of Icelandic horses and rich Viking history. Enjoy a farewell dinner with your small group at your accommodation (included), reminiscing about the week's adventures.

Staying inReykjavík
Driving distance395 km (245 mi)

Today your Ring Road circuit nears completion as your guide takes you back toward Reykjavík, stopping at West Iceland's natural wonders along the way.

Visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, which produces an incredible 180 liters (48 gallons) of boiling water per second. The hot water is piped to towns up to 64 kilometers (40 miles) away for heating homes and greenhouses, showcasing Iceland's innovative use of geothermal energy.

Continue to the spectacular twin waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar presents a unique sight where water seems to emerge directly from the Hallmundarhraun lava field, streaming through countless rivulets to create a series of beautiful cascades into the Hvítá river. The sapphire-blue water creates an ethereal scene. Nearby, Barnafoss ("Children's Falls") rushes through a narrow rocky gorge with tremendous force.

After completing your Ring Road journey, you'll arrive back in Reykjavík. Your evening is free to explore the capital at your leisure. Consider celebrating your completed Ring Road adventure at one of Reykjavík's excellent restaurants, or enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife scene.

Driving distance50 km (31 mi)

Your 7-day Iceland Ring Road tour has come to an end, and it's time to bid farewell to the Land of Fire and Ice. You'll be picked up from your accommodation by a shuttle bus for your transfer to Keflavík International Airport. We recommend being picked up approximately three hours before your flight departure time.

If you're flying in the afternoon, you could add an optional visit to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. This world-famous spa offers the perfect way to relax Icelandic-style before your flight, soaking in mineral-rich milky-blue waters surrounded by black lava fields.

We hope you've created amazing memories exploring Iceland's Ring Road highlights. We wish you a pleasant journey home and hope to welcome you back to Iceland again!

A small group of us did the Highlights of the Ring Road. It was an incredible tour. Iceland was spectacular. The food serviced on the tour was delicious, I especially love the lamb steak and cod. Our tour guide Siggi was knowledgeable and a great driver. I was disappointed in 3 of our accommodations,

FAQs about our guided group trips

On this type of tour, you’ll travel around Iceland by bus with the same driver-guide for the length of your trip. Guided group tours are a great way to make like-minded friends, as you’ll spend time with the same travelers for your whole vacation.

You’ll get to stay in accommodation around the country, and some tours include a few evening meals too. After a day’s exploring, you’ll go back to your private room and meet your guide and group the next morning to continue your trip.

All of our guided group tours start and finish in Reykjavík.

There are 2 group sizes available:

  • Small group: Up to 19 people
  • Standard group: Up to 32 people

Small groups offer a more intimate travel experience, whereas standard groups are more wallet-friendly.

You’ll likely be with people from a whole mix of backgrounds, from different countries and of different ages. Your guide will entertain you with fun facts and jokes as you journey around Iceland. It’s almost guaranteed you’ll be laughing along with your group!

There will most probably be a mix of solo travelers, couples, and small groups of friends and family.

The luggage restrictions on this guided group tour are as follows:

  • 1 suitcase or large bag per person for clothes and overnight items
  • 1 day bag for essential items, like a camera, extra clothes, and valuables

Each day your luggage will be loaded onto the bus. In the evening, you’ll take all your bags with you to your room.

Our guided group tours have fixed start dates and itineraries. While it’s not possible to customize the actual tour, you can tailor your trip with extra days and activities before or afterwards.

For example, you could add a couple more days in Reykjavík at the end of your trip. Fill these with day tours or exciting activities like ice caving and snowmobiling.

On a guided group tour, you’ll learn a lot about Icelandic history, nature, and culture from experienced tour guides. You’ll find their passion for the country infectious and gain a perspective on life in Iceland from these travel experts.

Guided group tours also mean you don’t need to worry about driving yourself on unfamiliar roads. They’re a fantastic way to explore Iceland if you want to meet like-minded travelers too.

That said, guided tours are by no means the only way to experience Iceland. If you’d prefer something more customizable, you could go for a multi-day tour by bus. Or if you want to set your own pace on a road trip, it’s hard to beat a self-drive tour.

Another option is a privately guided tour. This combines the experience of a locally guided tour with the intimacy of traveling in your own private group.

On an Iceland guided tour, you can expect to travel by bus in a small or large party. You can choose your preferred group size when you book.

Iceland small group tours are more intimate, whereas standard group tours are more wallet-friendly. The maximum number of people in a small group is 16, and 36 in a standard group.

Your driver-guide will lead the entire trip, which includes stays in the Icelandic countryside. Each day you’ll explore a new part of Iceland and enjoy commentary from your guide between stops.

As you’ll be with the same group of people throughout your trip, you’ll have the chance to socialize with fellow travelers and make friends (maybe even for life). There’s nothing like diving into Iceland’s epic nature for a bonding experience!

All of the guided Iceland vacation packages featured here include local transport, accommodation, breakfast, airport transfers, and activities. Some also include dinners in the countryside, so check the specific package for details.

You can customize your guided trip with extra days in Reykjavík at the start or end of your vacation. Use these to pack in day tours or an evening Northern Lights tour. You could even pay a relaxing visit to the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon.

In general, tipping is not as commonplace in Iceland as in some other countries. While tour guides would never expect to be tipped, they would receive them gratefully.

You can start planning your Iceland adventure right on this page. Browse the guided vacation packages above until you find the one for you.

Next, check departure dates on the tour page. Guided group tours have fixed dates and durations, although you can extend your trip with extra days in Reykjavík if you like. This would be your chance to add activities, like exploring an ice cave or bathing in hot springs.

After that, simply follow the checkout instructions to complete your booking. You’ll receive a confirmation email straight away, followed by your travel documents closer to your departure date.

You can check dates on the individual tour pages. Guided tours are available in a small or large group, with separate departure dates for each.

There are weekly or fortnightly departures throughout the popular summer and winter seasons. Make sure you book in advance as spaces can sell out quick.

Because guided group tours have fixed departure dates, it’s a good idea to book your vacation package before your flights. Once you’ve received the confirmation from Iceland Tours, you’re clear to book with your preferred airline.

That said, you might want to do a rough check for flights before you book your package to get a feel for what’s available.

Iceland is well connected to Europe and North America with daily direct flights to lots of major cities.

When visiting Iceland, it pays to pack smart and be prepared. The weather is changeable and conditions are likely to be different to what you’re used to at home.

Here’s an Iceland packing list that’s good for all seasons:

  • Warm, waterproof coat
  • Toasty inner layers
  • Hat, scarf, and gloves
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Sunglasses
  • Moisturizer and lip balm

There’s plenty to enjoy on a guided tour of Iceland. The great thing about them is that you can access locations you never would have known about. And you can travel to seemingly out-of-reach regions, like the Icelandic highlands.

Here’s just some of what you could get up to on an Iceland group tour:

Carbon offsetting is already included as standard with every Iceland Tours package. We have partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to cover the carbon footprint of the tour itself, so there is nothing extra you need to do or pay.

Iceland Tours is Travelife-certified, meaning our operations are independently assessed against sustainability standards covering environmental, social, and supply chain criteria. This certification reflects a commitment to responsible travel that goes beyond carbon offsetting, including how we select local accommodation and activity partners.

Carbon offsetting for international flights to and from Iceland is not included in the tour package, but your airline may offer offset options at the time of booking, or you can arrange this through a local or national environmental fund. For more on how we approach sustainable travel, see our sustainability policy and our article on responsible and sustainable travel in Iceland.

Yes, small group tours are one of the most sustainable ways to experience Iceland. By traveling together in a single vehicle with up to 20 guests, small group tours significantly reduce per-person carbon emissions compared to individual car rentals or private tours. This shared travel approach means fewer vehicles on Iceland's roads, less fuel consumption per traveler, and a lighter environmental footprint overall. When you choose a small group tour, you're not only getting expert guidance and a social travel experience, you're also making a more responsible choice for Iceland's pristine landscapes.

Iceland's Ring Road highlights include the Golden Circle's geothermal wonders (Geysir, Gullfoss, Þingvellir), South Coast waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss) and black sand beaches, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon with its floating icebergs, the Eastfjords' dramatic coastal scenery, North Iceland's Lake Mývatn volcanic area and Dettifoss waterfall, charming Akureyri town, and West Iceland's Hraunfossar waterfalls and Deildartunguhver hot spring. This 7-day tour covers all these essential Ring Road highlights in one comprehensive week-long journey.

Yes, 7 days is an ideal timeframe for experiencing Iceland's Ring Road highlights. While the Ring Road can technically be driven in less time, a week allows you to explore major attractions without rushing. This guided tour covers approximately 2,000 kilometers, stopping at the most spectacular sights in each region. You'll have time to truly experience locations like Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Lake Mývatn, and the Golden Circle rather than just driving past them.

This Iceland Ring Road tour package includes 6 nights of quality accommodation, daily continental breakfast, 4 dinners featuring local cuisine in the countryside, airport transfers, expert local guidance in English throughout, guided amphibian boat tour on Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and admission to Forest Lagoon geothermal baths. You'll also receive 24/7 emergency helpline support and carbon offsetting of your tour. The small group size (maximum 16 people) ensures a more personalized experience than standard bus tours.

On this Ring Road bus tour, you'll travel in a comfortable minibus with a maximum of 16 travelers, creating a more intimate experience than standard tours with up to 32 people. You'll have the same expert driver-guide throughout your 7-day journey around Iceland. Each day you'll explore different regions of the Ring Road, staying in countryside accommodation with private facilities. The smaller minibus allows access to locations where large coaches cannot go and creates a social atmosphere where you can easily connect with fellow travelers.

This summer Ring Road tour runs from May through mid-September when all roads are accessible and attractions are open. Summer offers the longest daylight hours (up to 21 hours in June), allowing more time at each location. The midnight sun creates beautiful evening light for photography. Weather is generally milder and more stable than winter, though Iceland's weather can change quickly year-round. Summer is also the best time to see Iceland's lush green landscapes, wildflowers, and abundant bird life.

Seven days provides an excellent balance for experiencing Iceland's Ring Road highlights without feeling rushed. While some tours attempt the Ring Road in 5-6 days, a week allows for more thorough exploration of key attractions. You'll have time for activities like the Jökulsárlón boat tour, exploring volcanic landscapes at Lake Mývatn, visiting museums and towns, and relaxing in geothermal baths. The pacing on this tour ensures you can truly experience each location rather than just checking boxes.

This small group Ring Road tour is limited to 16 travelers maximum, compared to standard bus tours that can have up to 32 people. You'll travel in a more comfortable minibus rather than a large coach. The smaller group size means more personalized attention from your guide, easier access to attractions (no waiting for large groups), quicker bathroom and photo stops, a more social atmosphere where you can get to know fellow travelers, and the ability to visit locations where large coaches cannot access.

This 7-day Ring Road tour visits Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls across all regions. You'll see Gullfoss on the Golden Circle, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss on the South Coast (including the chance to walk behind Seljalandsfoss), powerful Dettifoss in North Iceland (Europe's most powerful waterfall), horseshoe-shaped Goðafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), and the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss twin waterfalls in West Iceland. Each waterfall offers a completely different experience, from powerful cascades to delicate streams.

Absolutely! This small group Ring Road tour is perfect for solo travelers. You'll join other like-minded adventurers exploring Iceland together, making it easy to connect with fellow travelers throughout the week. The intimate group size of up to 16 people creates a social atmosphere without feeling overwhelming. You'll have your own private room each night while sharing daytime adventures around the Ring Road. Many solo travelers choose guided tours specifically for the social aspect and shared experiences.

The Golden Circle is a popular day trip route covering Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss in Southwest Iceland. A Ring Road tour is a complete circuit of Iceland covering approximately 1,330 kilometers (826 miles) of the country's main coastal highway. This 7-day Ring Road tour includes the Golden Circle as just one component, but also covers the South Coast, Eastfjords, North Iceland, and West Iceland. You'll experience Iceland's full diversity of landscapes, from glaciers and black sand beaches to volcanic areas and fishing villages.
