Tour Map and Itinerary

Day - 01 - Welcome to Iceland!

Show on Map

Your memorable, Iceland adventure begins the very moment you arrive at Keflavik Airport. Once you pick up your rental vehicle, you’ll head directly for Reykjavik and your exciting, first night in Iceland.

If your flight arrives early enough, we have a great suggestion for starting your trip off the right way: Plan a visit to Iceland’s world-famous Blue Lagoon. Be sure to pack your swimsuit, so you can take a relaxing dip in the Lagoon’s soothing, geothermal waters, before heading to your hotel.

Driving Distance
Approximately 50 km (30 miles)

Day - 02 - Waterfalls and Akureyri the capital of the North

Show on Map

Your next day’s journey continues toward the northern part of Iceland, ending in the north’s capital, Akureyri. As you head toward Borgarfjörður, we recommend stopping by the magnificent, Hraunfossar waterfalls, where the water seems to magically flows from the lava bed into the river below. You’ll then continue your journey toward Akureyri, passing through Skagafjörður, known for exceptional horse breeding; in fact, many stunning, Icelandic horses can be seen on your drive.

Driving Distance
Approximately 460 km (285 miles)
Akureyri area

Day - 03 - Waterfall and Lake Mývatn

Show on Map

Your whole day is dedicated to the marvels of the Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve, renowned as one of Iceland’s most inspiring, natural wonders. Of particular interest are two steam baths built for superb relaxation that sit straight on top of a geothermal area; the sulphur-free steam rises up through holes in the floor. Typically the temperature is around 50°C and the humidity is close to 100%. Guests can take a few turns in the steam baths and cool down in the outdoor shower in between.

On the way to Myvatn, plan to stop at the impressive, Godafoss waterfall, known as “the waterfall of the gods”. At day’s end, you will return to Akureyri for a second, overnight stay.

Driving Distance
Approximately 210 km (130 miles)
Akureyri area

Day - 04 - Dettifoss Waterfall and Ásbyrgi

Show on Map

Your day starts in the charming fishing village of Husavik. After Husavik, you will drive the Tjornes Peninsula coastline, where you can make a quick stop on the way at the extremity of the peninsula to enjoy the view and spot some seabirds. The journey then continues to the eastern part of Iceland, with a few stops on the way, for your next evening’s stay.

Driving Distance
Approximately 340 km (210 miles)
Egilsstaðir area

Day - 05 - The East Fjords

Show on Map

Today is the day to discover the East Fjords. Starting toward the fjord Reydarfjörður, where a small-but-fascinating, World War II history museum is located, you continue along the fjords toward Southeast Iceland. At times, the road hangs precariously high on the mountain slopes. Finally, you drive through the tunnel of Almannaskarð to arrive in the Höfn region, where you will spend that night.

Driving Distance
Approximately 275 km (170 miles)
Höfn area

Day - 06 - Skaftafell National Park , Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Waterfalls

Show on Map

Your next stop is Iceland’s scenic southeast. After passing various, outlet glaciers belonging to Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap, you’ll arrive at the stunningly surreal beauty of Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon. This exceptional sight sits at the foot of Iceland’s highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur.

Skaftafell National Park is another area definitely worth a visit. This oasis, surrounded by glaciers and black sand plains, offers a broad range of options for great hiking. Continue through Kirkjubaejarklaustur village, the Eldhraun lava field and the Mýrdalssandur plain, before you arrive in the Vík area.

Driving Distance
Approximately 275 - 355 km (170 - 220 miles)
Vík/Hvolsvöllur area

Day - 07 - Waterfalls and the Golden Circle

Show on Map

Continue westbound to the south coast of Iceland and explore the Golden Circle, which takes you to the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland: Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir National Park. On your way back to Reykjavik you will pass the magnificent waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
Your day will end in Reykjavík where you will spend your last night in Iceland.

Driving Distance
Approximately 300 km (186 miles)

Day - 08 - Departure

Show on Map

It seems as if your journey to fabulous Iceland only began a moment ago, but now it is time to head back home, driving back to Keflavík Airport for your flight. Depending on your flight’s time, you may be able to squeeze in a last day in Reykjavík or an extra night in there to experience all the amazing things that the city has to offer.

Driving Distance
Approximately 50 km (30 miles)

Customer Reviews

First of all I would like to thank Iceland Tours specially Marine for the booking and answering my questions. We had 7 day tour to go around ring road. All hotels selections were excellent. The details provided by Marine were excellent and had no issues finding any locations and logically arranged. Being vegetarian we were worried about finding places to eat and had no issues at all having to find something around with the use of Google. Excellent scenery everywhere, it was a joyful family vacation.

Excellent! We booked the self guided tour around the ring road, and couldn’t have been more pleased. Iceland Tours was very responsive to every question I had. Trip was perfect. No problems whatsoever. The itinerary was next to perfect. Loved our time, and enjoyed the beautiful country. I do recommend upgrading to a 4WD vehicle. All hotels were perfect except the Reykjavik ones. Reykjavik hotels were tolerable at best. HIGHLY recommend this tour company.

We had a great time! The itinerary gave us good ideas to choose from but we found other things to do. There were things on the itinerary that were not open until May. So… We found other things to do. We saw beautiful falls, glaciers, horses, Puffins, seals, northern lights, sheep, Reindeer, geyser, black sand beach, hot spas, sunshine, blue sky, mountains, mountains and more mountains. It made it easier for us with all the hotels booked.

Iceland is amazing. Every corner brings something new and the beauty is beyond description. Iceland tours made a first visit amazing and easy. From the car rental to the return, everything went smoothly. We had an eight day tour and found it just enough to see the major sites. But their guide took us from site to site with efficiency and great detail. The hotels all met or exceeded our expectations. It would take a tremendous amount of personal research to put together a trip with this much detail on your own. Their expertise made it easy.

Thank you Iceland tours!!! Your arrangements from the rental car, suggested routes, hotel reservations were on point. The time frames between destinations allowed for us to see all the splenders Iceland has to offer!!!!!

Iceland Tours was the perfect company to book our tour with. We got off the plane and headed to Hertz to pick up our car. The reservation was ready to go and we drove off to our hotel. We did the 8 day 7 night ring road tour and all our hotel reservations were taken care of (and the hotels were a great part of the trip!). The excursion guide that was provided was very well done. I would not hesitate to recommend Iceland Tours if you want to have a problem free trip!

That was an amazing trip. Expectations were met 100% and even more. Beautiful views and landscapes. Unforgettable experience. People are so nice and friendly! We’ve made friends with many! We going to repeat it for sure! Respect to Iceland !!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 8 day self-driving tour of Iceland. The car with the GPS and Wi-Fi worked out really well for our tour (Skoda station-wagon) and we were very happy with the hotel/guesthouse accommodations. The rooms were always very clean and comfortable, and the breakfasts were more than sufficient to start our days – fresh and lots of options. The scenery is beautiful in Iceland and we would highly recommend this tour. We hope to get back to Iceland again in the future – thanks for a great trip!

Our 3-person family visited Iceland 6-20-19 through 6-30-19 with everything arranged through Iceland Tours, including rental car, hotels, etc. for 8-day Ring Road trip around the island. We couldn’t have been happier during our self-guided-with-guidance trip!!

That was an amazing trip. Expectations were met 100% and even more. Beautiful views and landscapes. Unforgettable experience. People are so nice and friendly! We’ve made friends with many! We going to repeat it for sure! Respect to Iceland !!!
