Your guide to Skriðuklaustur, Iceland

Skriduklaustur sits in the scenic Fljótsdalur valley in East Iceland, about 25 km south of Egilsstadir. This cultural center occupies a historic building designed by German architect Fritz Höger and was once home to celebrated Icelandic author Gunnar Gunnarsson. Today, Skriduklaustur functions as a museum showcasing the author's life, archaeological discoveries from a medieval monastery, and exhibits on the region's natural and cultural history.

What to See at Skriduklaustur

The museum features several permanent exhibitions. The Gunnar Gunnarsson exhibition explores the life and works of Iceland's most translated author, displaying personal items, manuscripts, and photographs from his time living in this building. The archaeological exhibition presents findings from excavations of a 16th-century Augustinian monastery that once stood on this site, offering insight into medieval Iceland.

The natural history section covers the unique geology and wildlife of East Iceland, while rotating temporary exhibitions showcase contemporary art and regional cultural themes. The beautiful grounds surrounding Skriduklaustur include walking paths through the valley and views of the nearby Lagarfljót river.

Many visitors combine Skriduklaustur with Seyðisfjörður, a charming fjord town 30 km east known for its colorful wooden houses and arts scene. The area also provides access to Dettifoss waterfall (about 1.5 hours north) and the remote highlands of the interior.

Getting to Skriduklaustur

Skriduklaustur is easily accessible from Route 1, Iceland's Ring Road. From Reykjavik, the drive takes approximately 7 hours (680 km). From Akureyri in North Iceland, it's about 3 hours (270 km).
