Golden Circle & Black Sand Beaches Road Trip
Discover South Iceland and the volcanic Westman Islands on this fascinating 7-day self-drive tour that showcases Earth's geological forces at work. Witness bubbling hot springs creating steam clouds, giant glaciers carving landscapes, and jaw-dropping waterfalls thundering over cliffs. This unique itinerary goes beyond typical tourist routes, offering authentic experiences that reveal Iceland's volcanic heart.
This trip includes a full day of adventure in Reykjanes Geopark, home to volcanic systems that erupted spectacularly in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. You'll witness freshly formed lava fields where the rock is still black and sharp, contrasting dramatically with ancient moss-covered flows nearby. The opportunity to see such recent volcanic activity is incredibly rare and offers a powerful reminder of Iceland's dynamic geology.
Tour the stunning south coast with its mesmerizing black sand beaches backed by hexagonal basalt columns, impressive waterfalls that cascade over ancient cliffs, and the stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where enormous icebergs drift serenely toward the Atlantic Ocean. Walk along Diamond Beach where crystal-clear ice chunks sparkle against jet-black sand. Explore Vatnajökull National Park, which covers almost 15 percent of Iceland, hiking through landscapes where massive glaciers meet land.
Included with this package is a ferry sailing to the Westman Islands, a lesser-explored corner of South Iceland that offers extraordinary experiences. Visit Heimaey, the only inhabited island, where you can walk on top of lava from the dramatic 1973 eruption with buried streets beneath your feet. The Westman Islands are also one of the best places in Iceland to spot adorable puffins during summer months, with millions nesting on the towering cliff faces.

Highlights
Extra activities
On your way to Reykjavík yesterday, you had a tantalizing taste of the Reykjanes peninsula as you passed through its gigantic lava field. Today you'll get the chance to explore this geologically active area in depth and witness some of Iceland's most recent volcanic activity. The region is one of the most volcanically active areas in all of Iceland, experiencing a series of spectacular eruptions at the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. You can even see the brand-new lava field left behind by these recent eruptions – the rock is still sharp and fresh, completely black without any moss coverage. The opportunity to walk on such recently formed land is extraordinary.
Just around the corner is Krýsuvík, a fascinating cluster of bubbling mud pots and steaming hot springs lining a small valley. This active geothermal area is nestled on the shores of Kleifarvatn lake, offering stunning panoramic views across the water toward distant mountains. The colorful mineral deposits, hissing steam vents, and boiling pools create an otherworldly scene. Explore more of the Reykjanes peninsula's dramatic coastal cliffs, rugged lava fields, and unique geological features before driving to your accommodation in the Hveragerði area for the night.
After waking in the heart of South Iceland, you'll hit the road headed for Þingvellir National Park, beginning your Golden Circle adventure. This UNESCO World Heritage site delivers impressively on both natural beauty and cultural significance. It's here that you can walk between the European and North American continental plates, literally standing in the rift where continents are pulling apart. The dramatic Almannagjá gorge with its towering walls showcases this geological wonder perfectly. Þingvellir was also the gathering place where Viking-age Icelanders would convene for Alþingi, the annual parliament that met from 930 AD for nearly 900 years. The site is steeped in the legacy of this ancient democratic tradition. Follow signs throughout the park to discover the most significant historical locations and learn about the events that shaped Iceland's history.
Next, set your sights further north to the Geysir geothermal area. In this volcanically active valley, you'll find Strokkur geyser, which reliably erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, sending a powerful jet of warm water high into the air. The anticipation builds before each eruption! Finally, take a short drive to the nearby Gullfoss waterfall. This multi-tiered cascade is named 'Golden Falls' and ranks among the most impressive waterfalls in the entire country, with massive volumes of glacial water plunging into a rugged canyon. Spend the night in the area.
Today, enjoy the stunning scenery that Iceland's remarkable south coast has to offer at a leisurely pace. On your way from the Geysir area, stop at Kerið, a small lake nestled in a volcanic crater. The rock here displays a striking red color rather than Iceland's typical black volcanic stone, and the crater formed around 3,000 years ago. The vivid red slopes contrasting with the blue-green water create a beautiful sight. Continue south toward Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland's most entertaining waterfalls. Walk behind the powerful plume as it pours over the mountainside, feeling the refreshing spray on your face and experiencing the unique perspective from behind the falls. A 10-minute stroll away, you'll find Gljúfrabúi, another beautiful waterfall concealed inside a narrow canyon. Many people skip this hidden gem, but you won't regret the short detour! Afterwards, continue to Skógafoss, the impressive big brother to Seljalandsfoss. Follow the trail up the mountainside beside the waterfall for a captivating top-down view, or stand at the base to feel its power.
Finish your day by driving to Vík, stopping along the way to roam along Reynisfjara black sand beach. Admire the hexagonal basalt columns rising like natural architecture, while the dramatic Reynisdrangar sea stacks just offshore compete for your attention with the sheer lava cliffs backing the beach. It's entirely up to you how long you spend taking in the majesty of both. Spend the night in the Vík area.
Venture into Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland's largest protected area, which covers almost 15 percent of the entire country. The park is named after the vast Vatnajökull ice cap, whose dozens of smaller outlet glaciers flow down like frozen rivers. These outlets are ideal locations for guided adventure activities available as optional extras. The Skaftafell area, just off the Ring Road, serves as a perfect jumping-off point for exploration and outdoor activities. Here you can choose from numerous hiking trails winding through birch forests and alongside glaciers, including one leading to Svartifoss waterfall. This hidden gem cascades beautifully over a dramatic rock face made of hexagonal basalt columns – a truly unforgettable sight that rewards the moderate hike.
A short drive away, you'll find Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Fellsfjara, better known as Diamond Beach. Witness the magical interplay of ice and water here, where glistening icebergs drift slowly out to sea through the lagoon. Some wash up on the jet-black shore, creating the famous Diamond Beach scene where ice chunks sparkle like enormous gems scattered on dark sand. The contrast is absolutely stunning. Seals often swim between the icebergs, adding wildlife encounters to the spectacular scenery. After a full day of glacial wonders, drive back toward Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur for the night.
This morning, you'll turn off the Ring Road near Seljalandsfoss to catch the ferry to the fascinating Westman Islands. Your included ferry ticket takes you and your car on a scenic sailing to the largest island, Heimaey, with its picturesque harbor town and impressive cliffs that are home to thousands of nesting seabirds during summer. The ferry journey itself offers beautiful coastal views. Heimaey proves an ideal destination for a full day of exploration and discovery. The island's volcanic history is absolutely gripping. In 1973, a sudden volcanic eruption forced the evacuation of the entire island population. Lava flows threatened to close off the harbor, and residents fought the advancing lava with seawater pumps. Today, you can walk on top of the hardened lava with buried streets lying beneath your feet. Learn all about this historic event at the Eldheimar museum, which features a house that was excavated from the volcanic ash, frozen in time.
The Westman Islands are also recognized as one of the best places in Iceland to spot puffins, with the world's largest Atlantic puffin colony nesting here. Drive to the southern tip of the island to boost your chances of seeing these adorable birds during summer months. Along the way, admire the stunning rock formations in the towering cliff faces. Take the afternoon ferry back to the mainland and drive to Reykjavík for your final night in Iceland.
It's time to bid farewell to Iceland and drive back to Keflavík Airport, where you'll drop off your rental car before your flight home. Depending on your departure time, you might have a few morning hours to squeeze in final experiences. Grab breakfast at a Reykjavík cafe, browse shops one last time for souvenirs, or take a final stroll through streets you've come to appreciate. You'll leave the Land of Fire and Ice with vivid memories of its unique nature and culture, and a longing to return in your heart. From walking on fresh lava fields barely a few years old to exploring ancient volcanic craters, from watching puffins on remote islands to witnessing enormous icebergs drifting through lagoons, you've experienced the geological forces that continue shaping Iceland. The contrast of fire and ice, past and present volcanic activity, has shown you why Iceland remains one of Earth's most dynamic and fascinating destinations. Safe travels, and until next time!

On a self-drive trip with Iceland Tours, you’ll be at the wheel of the rental car of your choice and free to go pretty much where you want, whenever you want.
We provide a detailed itinerary to help you plan your route and where you want to stop along the way. But it’s up to you whether you want to stick to it or go your own way. If you do take detours, make sure that you aren’t too far from your accommodation on any given night.
That said, it’s a good idea to stick to the suggested itinerary if you’ve never visited Iceland before. Created by our Reykjavík-based travel experts, it contains plenty of things for you to and see and do on each leg of your trip. One thing’s for sure: you won’t be short on ideas!
You also get unlimited in-car Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected and use maps on your phone for navigation.
It’s best to book your trip at least a few weeks before you travel. This gives us enough time to organize your preferred accommodation and itinerary. For this reason, we’re unable to accept bookings with less than 1 week’s notice.
In the summer, which is the most popular time of year, booking a few months ahead is a good idea. In certain parts of the countryside, accommodation options are more limited and can be booked up well ahead of your trip.
You have to be at least 20 years old to rent a car in Iceland, or 23 years old for larger vehicles like jeeps and vans. You’ll need to have held a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year and present a credit card when you collect your car.
You don’t need an International Driving Permit unless your license is not in Latin script (for example, Arabic or Chinese).

The rules of the road in Iceland are similar to most other countries, although there are some local quirks that you might not be familiar with.
Iceland drives on the right and steering wheels are on the left side of the car. Distances and speed limits are given in kilometers only.
Roundabouts are very common in Iceland, especially in towns. If you’re not familiar with these, make sure you understand how to give way (yield) to other traffic.
In the countryside, you might encounter sheep on the road, or even reindeer in East Iceland. You may also come across gravel roads, single-lane bridges, and blind summits.
For all the info on how to handle these, see this guide to driving in Iceland.
Once you’ve paid your deposit for your trip, we’ll finalize bookings for your accommodation, rental car, and any activities. As soon as we receive confirmation of everything, we’ll email you, letting you know your travel documents are available in our portal.
We aim to finalize everything within a few weeks of receiving your booking request, but in busy periods this might take longer. That said, you’ll always receive all of your documents before your departure date.
