FAQs

1. What kind of trips do you offer?

With Iceland Tours, you can choose from a whole bunch of travel styles. Our most popular are self-drive tours, where you take the wheel of your own rental car. On a road trip, you can stop as often as you like and go wherever your heart takes you.

If you鈥檇 rather skip the driving, you can join a multi-day tour. You鈥檒l stay in Reykjav铆k and take day trips by bus to different attractions out of town. If you want to take it up a level, you could go for a guided group tour. A dedicated local guide will lead your group around the country. A great way to make new travel buddies!

Alternatively, you could go for a private guided tour. Your very own driver-guide will use their expert knowledge of Iceland to show you all sorts of hidden gems.聽

At the other end of the scale are camping trips. You get a rental car and camping gear included, and you鈥檒l sleep under the midnight sun. It鈥檚 harder to get much closer to nature than that.

Then there are day trips if you鈥檙e already in Iceland and want to add another experience to your itinerary.

2. How do I book with Iceland Tours?

It鈥檚 easy to book online with our website. First of all, browse our vacation packages and find the right one for you. Then pick your dates to work out your base price.

You can customize your package by choosing your accommodation type and rental car (self-drive and camping trips only). And of course, you can add extra activities so you can get even more out of your trip.

Still got questions? Get the full lowdown on how to book with us.

3. Are flights included?

So you can get the best deal and most flexibility, we don鈥檛 include flights with our packages.

Once you have a rough idea of when you want to travel, you can start searching for flights to Iceland. Of course, if you need help figuring out which airlines fly from your country, we鈥檙e happy to point you in the right direction. Simply get in touch if you need advice.

Thanks to its location in the North Atlantic, Iceland is well served by direct flights from lots of European countries and North America. If you鈥檙e coming from further afield, you鈥檒l probably need a connecting flight.

4. When should I book?

As a rule of thumb, it鈥檚 best to book at least a few weeks before you plan to travel. For availability reasons, we鈥檙e unable to book trips with less than 1 week鈥檚 notice.

For the summer season, it鈥檚 a good idea to book a few months ahead of when you plan to travel. This is the most popular time of year to visit Iceland and places to stay can be limited in more remote areas.

If you鈥檙e planning to join a guided group tour, we recommend booking a few months in advance. Departures are restricted to certain dates and the most popular ones can get booked up.

5. Can I customize my package?

Absolutely! For self-drive trips, you can pick your accommodation type and rental car. You can also add bonus activities in your free time, and extra nights in Reykjav铆k to the start or end of your trip.

For multi-day tours, you can pick your accommodation level and add some extra activities such as a trip to the Blue Lagoon (if it鈥檚 not already included in your package). Extra nights in Reykjav铆k are an option here too.

Other travel styles, like guided group tours, might have more limited customization options due to the nature of the trip. You鈥檒l be able to see all the options available to you at checkout.

Good to know: We can鈥檛 guarantee stays at specific hotels or guesthouses, but we鈥檒l always make sure that you get the standard of accommodation that you pay for. Read more about accommodation types.

If you鈥檇 like to make further customizations than those that are available to you at checkout, get in touch and we鈥檇 be happy to help. The additional charge for this service is 鈧150. Just so you know, it might not be possible to accommodate further customizations during the summer season. See our terms and conditions for full details.

6. Can I add extra nights to my package?

Yes, Iceland is a great destination for a family adventure!

9. Can I return my rental car to a different location?

If you prefer, you can drop off your rental car in Reykjav铆k or another urban location if you picked it up at the airport. You can also choose to drop it off at the airport if you collect it in Reykjav铆k.聽

This service is available for an extra fee of ISK 5,000鈥9,900 depending on drop-off location, which you would pay to the car rental provider.

Close

10. Can I purchase extra car insurance when I collect my car?

When you rent a car with us, you鈥檒l always get basic liability insurance and collision damage waiver (CDW) included as standard.聽

This is subject to an excess (deductible) that would need to be paid if you were to have an accident. You can pay to reduce the excess at the counter when you collect your car.

There you鈥檒l also have the option to add gravel road and volcanic ash insurance. The car rental rep will be able to tell you how much this costs at the counter. For more info, see our car rental page.

11. How can I pay for my booking?

On our website you can pay with Visa or Mastercard. Unfortunately we are not currently able to accept American Express.

When you book, we鈥檒l ask you to pay a 5% deposit toward the total amount for your trip. You can pay off the remaining balance 30 days before your arrival date. We鈥檒l send you an email to remind you of this with instructions on how to pay.

If you book with less than 30 days鈥 notice, we ask that you pay the full amount for your trip at the time of booking.

12. When will I receive my travel documents?

Once we鈥檝e confirmed all the accommodation and services for your trip with our suppliers, we鈥檒l send you all of your travel documents via email. These include your e-tickets, vouchers, and itinerary.

You don鈥檛 need to print these out for your arrival in Iceland, but you might want to just in case you鈥檙e unable to access them on your phone.

If you haven鈥檛 received your documents, take a look in your junk or spam folder. Some email apps filter out emails like these that include attachments.

Close

13. Can I change or cancel my booking?

If you need to modify your booking, you can do so up to 4 weeks before your arrival date. For all changes, we charge 鈧50 per person. Some suppliers may charge an extra fee for modifications, which you would also need to pay.

Good to know: If there are less than 3 weeks to go until your arrival date, we might not be able to amend your booking.

We understand that sometimes plans change and you might need to cancel your trip altogether. That鈥檚 why we offer free rebooking and won鈥檛 charge you a cancelation fee if you cancel your trip more than 30 days before your arrival date.

If you cancel less than 30 days before arrival, our general cancelation terms apply.

Our Book with Confidence promise has you covered if you need to change your plans for Covid-related reasons. If this happens, you can change your travel dates or cancel your trip up to 72 hours before you leave for Iceland without losing a penny.

14. Do I need a passport or visa to travel to Iceland?

If you鈥檙e a citizen of the EEA, you can travel to Iceland using your passport or national identity card visa-free. Otherwise, you鈥檒l need a valid passport with at least 3 months left on it before expiry.

Citizens of many countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can travel to Iceland for up to 90 days visa-free. Check the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration鈥檚 visa-free travel list to find out if you鈥檙e eligible.

If you do need a visa, let us know once we鈥檝e confirmed your booking and we can send you a confirmation letter for your visa application.

16. Is Iceland safe to visit?

Yes! Iceland is one of the safest countries on Earth. Thanks to its extremely low crime rate and excellent healthcare system, you can rest assured that you don鈥檛 need to worry about your safety in Iceland.

Around the country, you鈥檒l see children left to their own devices to happily play outside or walk to school by themselves. It鈥檚 so safe that babies are even left in prams outside caf茅s, so don鈥檛 be shocked if you see this. Iceland is a fantastic place for kids to run wild, totally carefree!

You might have heard about natural disasters like volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. Iceland has well tested warning and evacuation systems in place. And if a volcano just so happens to go off on your trip, it鈥檚 likely to be in an uninhabited area. In fact, some of them are great to go and visit.

Iceland uses the two-pin Europlug socket, which is the same as continental Europe. If you鈥檙e traveling from the UK or Ireland, you鈥檒l simply need an adapter.

The voltage in Iceland is 220V, so if you鈥檙e coming from North America, make sure your device is rated for 220V or use a voltage converter. Most plug adapters don鈥檛 convert the voltage, so double-check before you plug your device into the wall.

Iceland has its own currency, the Icelandic kr贸na (plural: kr贸nur, code: ISK). You can check the latest exchange rate with your local currency on the websites of Icelandic banks like Landsbankinn or Arion banki.

If you do want to carry some cash, you can exchange and withdraw cash at any bank. This is normally cheaper than buying Icelandic kr贸nur before you arrive in Iceland.

Some businesses in Iceland accept payments in euros, although this is not widespread. See our Travel Guide for all the info on money in Iceland.
