Staying inAkureyri area
Driving distance450 km (280 mi)

Your next day's journey takes you toward the northern part of Iceland, ending in Akureyri, the charming capital of the north. This scenic drive showcases diverse landscapes as you make your way around the country. Head toward the beautiful Borgarfjörður region, and we recommend stopping at the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfalls, where water flows from beneath a lava field directly into the river below, creating a series of delicate cascades. The interplay of water against black lava creates a memorable sight.

Continue your journey toward Akureyri, passing through Skagafjörður, Iceland's renowned horse-breeding region. Many stunning Icelandic horses can be seen grazing in the fields as you drive, their thick manes blowing in the wind. These sturdy, friendly animals are a quintessential part of Icelandic culture and have remained pure-bred for over a thousand years. As you wind through mountain passes and alongside fjords, you'll understand why this route is considered one of Iceland's most scenic drives. The diverse landscapes change dramatically as you progress northward, from farmlands to mountains to coastal scenery.

Arrive in Akureyri, nestled at the head of Eyjafjörður fjord, where you'll spend the night. This delightful town offers colorful houses, excellent restaurants, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere despite its northern location.

Staying inMývatn/Húsavík area
Driving distance200 km (124 mi)

The whole day is dedicated to exploring the marvels of Lake Mývatn Nature Reserve, known as one of Iceland's most fascinating areas of natural beauty. This extraordinary region offers an incredible concentration of geological wonders. On your way to Mývatn, make a stop at the impressive Goðafoss waterfall, known as the 'Waterfall of the Gods,' where water cascades dramatically over a 12-meter drop.

Continue to the Lake Mývatn area, where a full day of exploration awaits. One of the main attractions is the Námaskarð geothermal area, where you'll find bubbling mud pools and hissing steam vents. The ground is painted in vivid shades of yellow, orange, and red from sulfur and mineral deposits, creating an otherworldly landscape. You must not miss the Krafla volcano area with the stunning Víti crater lake and the Leirhnjúkur lava fields, where you can walk across recent volcanic flows from eruptions in the 1980s. Explore the mysterious lava formations of Dimmuborgir, often called 'Dark Castles,' where twisted rock sculptures create a labyrinth. Later, you can venture a walk up to the rim of Hverfjall crater for panoramic views over the entire region, or dip into the geothermal waters of Earth Lagoon (available as an add-on), located east of the lake. The warm, mineral-rich waters are perfect for unwinding after a day of geological wonders. Spend the night in the Mývatn area.

Staying inHöfn area
Driving distance460 km (286 mi)

Today is the day to discover the beautiful Eastfjords, one of Iceland's most underrated and scenic regions. Start your journey toward Reyðarfjörður, where you can visit a small but fascinating World War II museum that documents the Allied presence in these remote fjords during the war. Continue along the fjords toward Southeast Iceland, driving through spectacular coastal scenery. The road winds along the shoreline and lower mountainsides, offering beautiful views across the water at every turn. At times, the route takes you through dramatic landscapes where steep mountains plunge into deep blue waters.

Each fjord has its own character, from narrow and dramatic to broad and serene. Pass through tiny fishing villages where colorful houses cluster around small harbors, and locals still make their living from the sea. Watch for reindeer, which roam freely in this region and are found nowhere else in Iceland. These magnificent animals are more visible when they descend to lower elevations. As you drive, you'll pass through tunnels carved through mountains, connecting one spectacular fjord to the next. The journey culminates as you drive through the Almannaskarð tunnel, emerging in the Höfn region with spectacular views of Vatnajökull glacier looming in the distance. Arrive in Höfn, known as Iceland's lobster capital, where you'll spend the night.

Staying inHvolsvöllur/Hella area
Driving distance365 km (227 mi)

Your next stop is Iceland's scenic southeast, home to some of the country's most spectacular glacial landscapes. After passing various outlet glaciers belonging to Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap, you'll arrive at the stunningly surreal beauty of Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Watch enormous icebergs that have calved from the glacier drift slowly through deep blue water. This exceptional sight sits at the foot of Iceland's highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur, creating a dramatic backdrop. The icebergs range from brilliant white to stunning shades of blue, some streaked with black volcanic ash. Cross the road to Diamond Beach, where ice chunks wash up on black sand, sparkling like giant diamonds.

Visit Skaftafell, another area definitely worth exploring. This oasis, surrounded by glaciers and black sand plains, offers a broad range of options for great hiking through birch forests with views of glacial tongues and waterfalls. Continue through Kirkjubæjarklaustur village, across the vast Eldhraun lava field covered in soft green moss, and over the Mýrdalssandur plain before arriving in the Vík area. We recommend you stop at Reynisfjara beach, a famous black sand beach known for the dramatic Reynisdrangar sea stacks that rise from the sea just offshore and its impressive hexagonal basalt columns. You can also stop at Dyrhólaey cape, the southernmost point of mainland Iceland, where a 120-meter-high sea cliff offers spectacular coastal views. Spend the night in the Vík area.

Staying inReykjavík
Driving distance220 km (137 mi)

Continue westbound along the spectacular south coast. The village of Skógar is the next place of interest, known for its beautiful Skógafoss waterfall and local folk museum. This 60-meter-high waterfall is one of Iceland's most impressive, and you can climb stairs beside the falls for incredible aerial views. Visit the Skógar Folk Museum to see how Icelanders lived in past centuries.

As you continue toward Hella, stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can actually walk behind the cascading water for a unique perspective. Don't miss the nearby hidden Gljúfrabúi waterfall tucked inside a narrow canyon. Continue westbound to explore the world-famous Golden Circle, which takes you to the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland. Begin with Gullfoss, the powerful 'Golden Waterfall,' where massive volumes of water plunge in two dramatic stages into a rugged canyon.

Continue to the Geysir geothermal area, home to numerous hot springs and the famous Strokkur geyser, which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Finally, visit Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can walk between tectonic plates and stand where Iceland's ancient parliament was founded over a thousand years ago. Your day will end in Reykjavík, where you'll spend your last night in Iceland, perhaps celebrating your incredible Ring Road journey with dinner at one of the city's excellent restaurants.

Driving distance50 km (31 mi)

It seems as if your journey to fabulous Iceland only began a moment ago, but now it is time to head back home. Depending on your flight time, you may have a few hours to enjoy a final morning in Reykjavík. Take a leisurely breakfast at one of the city's excellent cafes, perhaps trying traditional Icelandic pastries or a hearty meal. Do some last-minute souvenir shopping for Icelandic wool sweaters or local chocolate and treats. If time permits, visit any Reykjavík attractions you might have missed, or take one final walk through the colorful streets, soaking in the unique atmosphere of this northern capital.

For those with later flights, you may be able to squeeze in a last activity in Reykjavík, or even book an extra night to fully experience all the amazing things that the city has to offer, from museums and galleries to restaurants and the vibrant local culture. Drive back to Keflavík Airport to drop off your rental car and check in for your flight home, carrying memories of the complete Ring Road circuit, from northern fjords and volcanic landscapes to floating icebergs and black sand beaches. You've circled the entire country in just one week, experiencing Iceland's incredible diversity and natural beauty. You're already planning your return.

Yes! Completing the Iceland Ring Road in 7 days is absolutely possible and one of the most popular ways to experience the country. This itinerary circles the entire island via Route 1, covering approximately 1,300 kilometers while visiting all major attractions including the Golden Circle, Lake Mývatn, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the Eastfjords, and the South Coast. While the pace is more energetic than longer tours, you'll have time to stop at waterfalls, explore black sand beaches, and soak in the dramatic landscapes that make Iceland special. The best time for an Iceland Ring Road 7 days adventure depends on what you want to experience. Summer (June-August) offers the longest daylight hours, warmer weather, and easier driving conditions, making it ideal for first-time visitors. The midnight sun means you can explore well into the evening. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) provide fewer crowds and potential Northern Lights viewing, though weather can be more unpredictable. Winter (November-March) offers stunning snowy landscapes and Northern Lights opportunities, but requires more caution due to shorter days and challenging road conditions. We offer this tour year-round, so you can choose the season that best matches your travel style.

On a self-drive trip with Iceland Tours, you’ll be at the wheel of the rental car of your choice and free to go pretty much where you want, whenever you want.

We provide a detailed itinerary to help you plan your route and where you want to stop along the way. But it’s up to you whether you want to stick to it or go your own way. If you do take detours, make sure that you aren’t too far from your accommodation on any given night.

That said, it’s a good idea to stick to the suggested itinerary if you’ve never visited Iceland before. Created by our Reykjavík-based travel experts, it contains plenty of things for you to and see and do on each leg of your trip. One thing’s for sure: you won’t be short on ideas!

You also get unlimited in-car Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected and use maps on your phone for navigation.

It’s best to book your trip at least a few weeks before you travel. This gives us enough time to organize your preferred accommodation and itinerary. For this reason, we’re unable to accept bookings with less than 1 week’s notice.

In the summer, which is the most popular time of year, booking a few months ahead is a good idea. In certain parts of the countryside, accommodation options are more limited and can be booked up well ahead of your trip.

You have to be at least 20 years old to rent a car in Iceland, or 23 years old for larger vehicles like jeeps and vans. You’ll need to have held a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year and present a credit card when you collect your car.

You don’t need an International Driving Permit unless your license is not in Latin script (for example, Arabic or Chinese).

Find out more about car rental in Iceland.

Yes! It’s possible to add extra activities or extend your trip with additional nights in Reykjavík or the countryside. Check the itinerary above to see what activities are available on what day.

Of course you can add extra adventures! We want you to be able to get the absolute most out of your trip to Iceland, so you can pick optional extra activities at checkout. You’ll be shown exactly what’s on offer for each day of your trip.

And if you feel like you just don’t have enough time to fit it all in, you can also add extra days.

The rules of the road in Iceland are similar to most other countries, although there are some local quirks that you might not be familiar with.

Iceland drives on the right and steering wheels are on the left side of the car. Distances and speed limits are given in kilometers only.

Roundabouts are very common in Iceland, especially in towns. If you’re not familiar with these, make sure you understand how to give way (yield) to other traffic.

In the countryside, you might encounter sheep on the road, or even reindeer in East Iceland. You may also come across gravel roads, single-lane bridges, and blind summits.

For all the info on how to handle these, see this guide to driving in Iceland.

Once you’ve paid your deposit for your trip, we’ll finalize bookings for your accommodation, rental car, and any activities. As soon as we receive confirmation of everything, we’ll email you, letting you know your travel documents are available in our portal.

We aim to finalize everything within a few weeks of receiving your booking request, but in busy periods this might take longer. That said, you’ll always receive all of your documents before your departure date.

You’ll be able to pick up your rental car at Keflavík International Airport from the arrivals hall. Before your trip, we’ll send you information about where to go in the terminal to collect your keys.

Make sure you have your driver’s license and credit card ready when you collect your vehicle.

If you land late at night, you can use the out-of-hours phone at the pick-up desk to contact someone who will be able to help you.

You also have the option to collect your rental car in Reykjavík, if you’re planning to spend some extra days in the city before your trip starts. If you’d like to do this, please let us know in the ‘Special requests’ box at checkout.

Yes, you can easily collect your rental car from Reykjavík instead of Keflavik Airport.

During the booking steps on our website, just let us know you'd prefer your pick-up/drop-off location to be in the city centre. We'll take care of it for you, no problem.

Just a quick heads-up: if you request different pick-up and drop-off locations (e.g. collect from the airport, drop off in the city, or vice versa) there's a one-way fee of around ISK 7.900 ISK (EUR 60). You'll pay this directly to the rental company when you pick up the car.
