Þingvellir National Park

This historic site is a destination that you simply do not want to miss. Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament, the oldest in the world, was founded at Þingvellir (Thingvellir) in 930. In 1000 the Law speaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. And, on June 17, 1944 the independence of the Republic of Iceland officially was proclaimed at Thingvellir.

Þingvellir has geological significance, as well — Almannagjá Canyon there was formed between two tectonic plates, the North American tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate.
