Hraunfossar and Barnafoss

In Reykholt you can find two of the most spectacular waterfalls in the area: Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. These waterfalls are said to be among Iceland’s true, hidden gems, and if you are in the area, don’t miss these two, natural gems.

Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls that flow through the surrounding lava and rapids, emptying into the Hvita River. Hraunfossar gets it name from the lava surrounding it.

Above Hraunfossar is scenic Barnafoss (Children’s Fall). According to legend, the waterfall was named Children’s Fall after two boys disappeared, while their parents went to church for Christmas Mass. The parents searched for the children, but their tracks disappeared by the waterfall, leaving all to conclude that the children must have fallen into the river and drowned. The waterfall was named Children’s Fall in their memory.
