You’ll find the city of Borgarnes located about 75 km (46 miles) from Reykjavík, resting on a peninsula on the shores of Borgarfjörður. In Borgarnes, look for the Settlement Center museum, based in the city’s two, oldest buildings. At the museum, you’ll learn about the settlement of Iceland and about the famous Icelandic Viking, Egill Skallagrímsson, who is also said to be the first Icelandic poet. The exhibit there provides invaluable insights into the country’s history and culture, telling the story of its discovery; of the first men to set foot there and of how the world’s first parliament, Althing, was established. Traveling with a child or just need to take a little break? Try stopping by the Bjössaróló playground, located near the Settlement Center.
