About our winter self-drive packages

In the winter months, you can experience a totally different side of Iceland. Watch a geyser erupt out of a sheet of ice, visit the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and spend the evenings hunting down the Aurora Borealis.

With these Iceland self-drive winter tours, you’re behind the wheel. Having a car in Iceland gives you ultimate freedom to stop when and where you like. You could even drive the Ring Road: Icelandic roads are cleared regularly after snowfall.

If you’ve never visited Iceland, you might not know all it has to offer. You can bathe in naturally heated spas like the Blue Lagoon. Or if you’re the adventurous type, explore an ice cave underneath a glacier.

Our most popular winter road trips include favorites such as the classic Golden Circle route, the South Coast with its towering waterfalls, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula with its own glacier and cliff-lined coastline.

On your winter trip to Iceland, you’ll stay in hand-selected accommodation around the country. We take care of all the arrangements. So all that’s left for you to do is follow the action-packed itinerary we’ve put together for you.

You’ll also get a reliable rental car with winter tires for easier handling. What’s more, you get in-car Wi-Fi and access to our 24/7 helpline if you need assistance.

Start planning your self-drive tour in Iceland today! When you can secure your booking with just a 5% deposit, there’s no reason not to.

    FAQs

    1. Information about COVID-19 and travelling to Iceland

    Travelling to Iceland

The Icelandic Directorate of Health announced new information for travellers to Iceland.

From 18 March, all passengers who can present a valid full vaccination certificate with an approved vaccine against COVID-19 are allowed to enter Iceland without needing to quarantine or undergo border screening for Covid-19.

Those who are able to submit proof of a prior COVID-19 infection with a PCR test or an antibody test issued by an EEA/EFTA country are also exempt from border screening and quarantine rules.

You will find a summary of some important questions and answers regarding Covid-19 and travelling to Iceland here: Covid-19 information page.

    3. Driving in Iceland

Road conditions in Iceland can vary greatly. The “circle road” (road nr. 1) goes all around the island and is nearly asphalted all the way. Smaller roads are often very narrow, steep gravel roads with potholes and sharp bends. The two main F roads crossing the highland and inner highland roads are unpaved tracks. We highly recommend renting a 4 WD if you want to reach these areas. Highland tracks are usually closed until the end of June or beginning of July. Before driving into the highland areas it is necessary to check road and weather conditions, by phoning 1777 or visiting www.road.is.

The speed limit in built up areas is 50 km/h, on roads outside built up areas 90 km/h and on gravel roads 80 km/h. In Iceland you have to drive with daytime running lights all around the clock.

    4. Travel Documents

    5. Are the flights included in the package?

We believe that in times of low cost flights and due to a higher flexibility, it is best for you to book your flight apart from the package with us. Therefore we do not arrange airfare to or from our destinations because it is generally cheaper for you to book your flights directly with the airlines. This also allows you to take advantage of the airlines’ miles or frequent flyer programs. We recommend that you contact the airlines directly for information about flights and bookings. Nevertheless, we are prepared to help you with the airlines that you can check out, depending on your country.
