Kirkjubæjarklaustur

You’ll find Kirkjubæjarklaustur situated between Vík í Mýrdal and Höfn in the south of Iceland. With only about 150 inhabitants Kirkjubæjarklaustur is a part of the municipality of Skaftárhreppur. Its tongue-twisting name means” church farm convent.” From 1186 to 1550 the Benedictine convent was at Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Kirkjubæjarklaustur is in the center of the south coast of Iceland with many nearby tourist attractions, including lake craters, Eldgjá and Skaftafell National Park. If you are in the area, be sure to stop by Kirkjugólf (“church floor”), a natural pavement of basalt, located in the east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
