Godafoss Waterfall

Breathtaking Godafoss waterfall is located in the northeastern region of Iceland in the Skjálfandafljót River (just off Main Ring Road 1).

According to Icelandic lore, the waterfall played an important role in the pagan Icelandic peoples’ conversion to Christianity. According to the Sagas Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoð Þorkelsson, a lawspeaker in Iceland’s Parliament (Althingi) threw his statues of pagan gods into the falls as a symbolic act of the conversion, and this is how the waterfall got its name.
