Ásbyrgi

About 50 km east of Húsavík is Ásbyrgi Canyon, part of the Vatnajökull National Park. This horseshoe-shaped canyon is some around 3.5 km in length and more than 1 km wide. According to Icelandic mythology, the canyon was formed by the hoof print of Odin’s eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, That’s why, according to legend, the canyon is shaped like a horseshoe.
