Day 2: Reykjavik-Golden Circle-Skógar/Vík (Driving distance approx. 370km)

GeysirYou can start by a drive to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the geological wonders of the world. At Thingvellir you can see the effects of the tectonic plate movements which have opened various cracks and fissures in the earth’s crust, and it was here that the Icelandic Parliament was founded in the 10th century. You continue to the famous Geysir Area where the Strokkur hot spring ejects its water column high into the air every 5 – 10 minutes and where numerous small springs are boil and bubble.  Afterwards you only have a short drive to reach Gullfoss, surely one of the country’s most beautiful waterfalls. Drive along the south coast to Skógar/ Vík area for your overnight stay.

Highlights of this day: The Golden Circle, Thingvellir National Park, Geysir, waterfall Gullfoss, waterfall Seljalandsfoss.

Day 3: Skógar/Vík – Kirkjubaejarklaustur-Skaftafell-Skógar/Vík (Driving distance approx. 300 km)
Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon

Today you will visit one of the most popular and beautiful sights of Iceland. Skaftafell National Park. Drive east in the morning to Skaftafell, a breathtaking area right under Vatnajökull Glacier known for its unique natural features and vegetation. Here you can choose between many different hiking trails through the park and visit beautiful waterfalls like Svartifoss (more information about hiking trails in the National Park office). If you wish you could continue 70 km to the east in order to reach the glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon, one of the most spectacular sights in Iceland.  Enormous icebergs constantly break off the glacier into the lagoon, melting slowly as they drift towards the sea nearby. You can take a 30-40 min. boat trip and walk around the lagoon to enjoy this amazing landscape. Drive back to Skógar/Vík area for a second night.

Highlights of this day: Skaftafell National Park, waterfall Svartifoss, Vatnajökull glacier, Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, Vík

Day 4: Skógar/Vík -  Reykjavik (Driving distance approx. 300 km)

Seljalandsfoss Today you will spend the day along the south coast. This
gives you a chance to take a closer look at attractions that you did not have the time to visit on your way east.   You will pass two spectacular waterfalls the Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss, two stops you must not miss. You can walk behind Seljalandsfoss and at Skógar you will find a folk museum showing how people lived in past centuries in Iceland. The east road leads you to Dyrhólaey bird cliffs where different species of seabirds breed. The most colorful of all is the puffin. Please note that the Dyrhólaey cliff is closed during the breeding season (until late June) and that the puffins leave the land around mid August! The black sand beaches of the south coast are famous and you can take a walk on them in the little village of Vík or in Reynishverfi. Drive back and overnight stay in Reykjavik.

Highlights of this day: Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls, Skógar museum, Dyrhólaey.

Day 5: Departure (Driving distance approx. 50 km)

Drive to Keflavik Airport for return of the rented vehicle and flight back home.Reykjavik
Or book an extra night in Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland!

Reykjavik is Iceland’s largest city and often called the capital of the north because of its location. With only approximately four hours of daylight in the wintertime, the city has a mysterious yet dynamic atmosphere, while in summer it is bustling and full of energy, with almost 24 hours of daylight!

Reykjavik offers a wide range of sights to visit and lots of activities.

Among the things you can visit in Reykjavik are the old city centre where you can walk by the lake, Tjörnin , visit the Town Hall, and walk around the  Austurvöllur square, where the Parliament building stands, and down to the harbour. You can stroll along the main street, Laugavegur to have a look at the shops and the art galleries and find a restaurant or a café to your liking.  Do not miss the church Hallgrímskirkja or the dome Perlan, a modern building from where you have a magnificent view over the whole city.  It is also possible to go to the Laugardalur valley for a swim in the outdoor thermal pool or a walk in the botanical gardens. There are several museums worth visiting in Reykjavik, for example the National Museum of Iceland near the University, the National Gallery of Iceland and the Reykjavik Art Gallery (includes 3 different collections).
A whale-watching tour from Reykjavik harbour is a wonderful experience: a trip out to sea to look at whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

An interesting half-day excursion from Reykjavik could be to the Reykjanes Peninsula, taking you to the geothermal springs in Krýsuvík. If you did not stop at the Blue Lagoon on day 1, the highlight of the tour on your way back would then be a visit of the famous Blue Lagoon for a relaxing swim in the geothermal water.  Approx. 120 km round trip.
