Day 1: Arrival in Keflavik Airport – drive to Reykjavik (Driving distance approx. 50 km) Arrival at Keflavik Airport. Pick-up of rented vehicle and drive to Reykjavik for your first night’s stay in Iceland.
Depending on your arrival time, we recommend you make a stop at the Blue Lagoon on the way and have a swim in the warm geothermal water.
Day 2: Reykjavik – Thingvellir - Gullfoss/Geysir (Driving distance approx. 250 km)
Today you will see some of the most famous sights in Iceland. You can start with a drive to Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park. This is a highly interesting area both from geological and historical point of view. At Thingvellir you can see the effects of the tectonic plate movements which have opened various cracks and fissures in the earth’s crust, and it was here that the Icelandic Parliament was founded in the 10th century. You continue to the famous Geysir area where the Strokkur hot spring ejects its water column high into the air every 5 – 10 minutes and where numerous small springs boil and bubble. Afterwards you only have a short drive to reach Gullfoss, surely one of the country’s most beautiful waterfalls.
Highlights of this day: Golden Circle, Thingvellir National Park, Geysir, Strokkur, waterfall Gullfoss.
Day 3: Kjölur – Skagafjörður (Driving distance approx. 330 km)
Today you will start your journey into the highlands of Iceland. From Gullfoss, you drive north and take the Kjölur highland track located between the great Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers. On clear days, the view of the mountains and the glaciers is magnificent. This rough track will lead you to Hveravellir (“hot spring plains”), a fantastic geothermal area. You can walk around the hot spring area, or bathe in a hot pot with natural warm water. Then you continue along the northern part of the Kjölur track until you reach Skagafjörður. This is Iceland’s most famous horse-breeding area so you will certainly see many of the charming Icelandic horses in the meadows. You can visit the beautifully restored turf farm museum at Glaumbær (not included). Drive to Akureyri, the capital city of the north. Explore the town, with its beautiful church and botanical garden. Overnight in Akureyri.
Highlights of this day: Highlands of Iceland, Kjölur, Hveravellir, Skagafjörður, Glaumbær museum, Akureyri town.
Day 4: Myvatn (Driving distance approx. 50 km)
Continue to Myvatn, with a stop en route at the waterfall Godafoss “The fall of the gods”. Spend the day at Myvatn exploring the wonders of the lake, which is one of Iceland’s most interesting regions with fantastic volcanic formations, geothermal activity and the lake itself, teeming with bird life, particularly ducks. You can walk among the weird lava formations at Dimmuborgir and explore the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir. One of Myvatn’s main attractions is the Námskarð geothermal area where you will find bubbling mud pools and hissing steam vents. You must not miss the Krafla area, north of the Krafla power station with the crater Víti crater and the Leirhnjúkur area. The walk towards Leirhnjúkur is worth while since it leads you to a small geothermal area and then to a line of craters surrounded by chaotic black lava fields, resulting from a series of volcanic eruptions that took place in 1975 – 1984. Overnight in or near the Myvatn area.
Highlights of this day: Lake Myvatn, waterfall Godafoss, Dimmuborgir, Skútustaðir, Námskarð, Krafla, Leirhnjúkur.
Day 5: Myvatn – Husavik – Dettifoss – Myvatn (Driving distance approx. 190 km)
You start your day by driving to the charming fishing village of Husavik where it is possible to go on a whale watching tour (not included). Then you drive along the coastline of the Tjörnes peninsula and if the weather conditions are good you can make a small stop at the extremity of the peninsula to enjoy the view and even spot some seabirds. Ásbyrgi is your next stop. This horse-shoe-shaped gorge with its impressive rock walls and abundant vegetation is the ideal place to take a walk or have a picnic. Heading south from Ásbyrgi the road leads you to the mighty waterfall Dettifoss where you will feel the earth tremble under the force of the glacial water, but be careful not to get to close: the edges of the chasm are not fenced and the ground may be slippery. Another option after leaving Ásbyrgi is to drive to the Hljóðaklettar rocks and then continue to Dettifoss (track on the west side of the river Jökulsá). Overnight in or near the Myvatn area.
Highlights of this day: Husavik, Tjörnes peninsula, Ásbyrgi, waterfall Dettifoss.
Day 6: Myvatn – Sprengisandur (Driving distance approx. 280 km)Start your day with a drive south through Bárdardalur valley to the waterfall Aldeyjarfoss, which is framed by impressive basalt columns. From there, you drive south over a rough track, Sprengisandur, which leads you across the desert plateau in the centre of Iceland. This wild highland area is not so easy to cross, not only because the track is narrow, winding and bumpy, but also because two large glacial rivers must be crossed – and there are no bridges! Finally, you arrive in the Southern region although you will not see any inhabited areas yet. Overnight near Landmannalaugar.
Highlights of this day: Wild highland area, waterfall Aldeyjarfoss, Sprengisandur, Glacial Rivers.
Day 7: Landmannalaugar – Reykjavik (Driving distance approx. 250 km)
You start the day by driving to Landmannalaugar. You can either take the mountain road north of Hrauneyjar (F208) or the track at the foot of Mount Hekla (F225) Landmannalaugar is a highlight of every trip to Iceland. Here you can walk between lovely colorful rhyolite mountains, black obsidian lava and hot springs. One of the hot springs is located in a river, creating a wonderful place for a relaxing swim or soak at just the right temperature. You can use the morning for a walk in Landmannalaugar and then start your journey towards Reykjavik. Drive through the valley Thjórsárdalur (Þjórsárdalur), the longest in Iceland. From the time when the country was settled until Mount Hekla erupted in 1104 there was a flourishing little farming community in the valley. The whole valley was showered in ash during the eruption. One of the buried farms, Stöng, has been excavated and used as a model for the reconstructed Saga Age farm “þódveldisbærinn” which is open to tourists in the summer. On the way to Reykjavik you can also stop at the Hjálparfoss Waterfall close to “Þjódveldisbærinn”. Overnight in Reykjavik.
Highlights of this day: Landmannalaugar, Thjórsárdalur, Stöng museum, waterfall Hjálparfoss, Reykjavik.
Day 8: DepartureDrive back to Keflavik Airport for your flight back home.

Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland!
Reykjavik is Iceland’s largest city and often called the capital of the north because of its location. With only approximately four hours of daylight in the wintertime, the city has a mysterious yet dynamic atmosphere, while in summer it is bustling and full of energy, with almost 24 hours of daylight!
Reykjavik offers a wide range of sights to visit and lots of activities.
Among the things you can visit in Reykjavik are the old city centre where you can walk by the lake, Tjörnin , visit the Town Hall, and walk through the Austurvöllur square, where the Parliament building stands, and down to the harbour. You can stroll along the main street, Laugavegur to have a look at the shops and the art galleries and find a restaurant or a café to your liking. Do not miss the church Hallgrímskirkja or the dome Perlan, a modern building from where you have a magnificent view over the whole city. It is also possible to go to the Laugardalur valley for a swim in the outdoor thermal pool or a walk in the botanical gardens. There are several museums worth visiting in Reykjavik, for example the National Museum of Iceland near the University, the National Gallery of Iceland and the Reykjavik Art Gallery (includes 3 different collections).
A whale-watching tour from Reykjavik harbour is a wonderful experience: a trip out to sea to look at whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.
An interesting half-day excursion from Reykjavik could be to the Reykjanes Peninsula, taking you to the geothermal springs in Krýsuvík. If you did not stop at the Blue Lagoon on day 1, the highlight of the tour on your way back would then be a visit of the famous Blue Lagoon for a relaxing swim in the geothermal water. Approx. 120 km round trip.
