Possible stops include the basalt pillars of Gerðuberg, Búðir with its small wooden church surrounded by a lava field, Arnarstapi, a small fishing village where you can have a look at the fascinating rock formations by the old pier and Djúpalónssandur, a black sand beach. On the north of the peninsula you will drive along the shore of the Breiðafjörður Bay, passing through charming fishing villages. Overnight in Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Day 3:  Snaefellsnes - Borgarfjörður - Thingvellir - Selfoss (Driving distance approx. 230 km)
HraunfossarFrom Snaefellsnes you head back to the Borgarfjörður Region. This time you will take the time to explore this region.  You can make a stop at Deildartunguhver hot spring (the biggest in Iceland in terms of water production per second), Reykholt where the famous medieval writer Snorri Sturluson lived and the Hraunfossar waterfalls where the water flows out from beneath a lava field into the river below. The Barnafoss waterfall is just a short walk away from Hraunfossar.

Then drive along the Uxahryggir road to Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park, consider a geological wonder of the world. This is a highly interesting area both from the geological and the historical point of view. At Thingvellir you can see the effects of the tectonic plate movements which have opened various cracks and fissures in the earth’s crust, and it was here that the Icelandic Parliament was founded in the 10th century. Overnight in the Selfoss region.

Highlights of this day: Deildartunguhver, Reykholt, waterfall Hraunfossar, Thingvellir National Park.

Day 4:  Selfoss – Gullfoss - Geysir - Skógar/Vík (Driving distance approx. 300 km)

Afterwards you only have a short drive to Gullfoss, which many regard as Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall. Head east towards the villages of Hella and Hvolsvöllur.

On your way along the south coast you will pass the Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls, two stops you must not miss. You can walk behind Seljalandsfoss and at Skógar you will also find a very interesting folk museum (not included). Next you can stop at the magnificent Dyrhólaey Cape. You can either take the road up to the top of the cape, (be careful, it is very steep and has dangerous bends) and have a look at the bird cliff there or drive to a beautiful black sand beach at the foot of the cape. Overnight in Skógar/Vík area.

*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season from May 15 til June 23 and from mid- August the puffins will have gone to sea!

Before continuing across the Mýrdalssandur plains and the vast Eldhraun lava field to Kirkjubaejarklaustur, a small village located in a charming setting.

You will drive across the vast black sand plain Skeiðarársandur before arriving in Skaftafell.  Skaftafell National Park is a magnificent area. The birch forest is like an oasis surrounded by the enormous tongues of the Vatnajökull glacier and the sands of Skeiðararasandur. There are many walks and hikes in Skaftafell; information available at the service centre of the national park. Then continue east in order to reach the glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon, one of the most spectacular sights in Iceland. Enormous icebergs constantly break off the glacier into the lagoon, melting slowly as they drift towards the sea nearby. Or book an extra night in Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland!

Reykjavik is Iceland’s largest city and often called the capital of the north because of its location. With only approximately four hours of daylight in the wintertime, the city has a mysterious yet dynamic atmosphere, while in summer it is bustling and full of energy, with almost 24 hours of daylight!

Reykjavik offers a wide range of sights to visit and lots of activities.

ReykjavikAmong the things you can visit in Reykjavik are the old city centre where you can walk by the lake, Tjörnin , visit the Town Hall, and walk around the Austurvöllur square, where the Parliament building stands, and down to the harbour. You can stroll along the main street, Laugavegur to have a look at the shops and the art galleries and find a restaurant or a café to your liking.  Do not miss the church Hallgrímskirkja or the dome Perlan, a modern building from where you have a panoramic view over the whole city. It is also possible to go to the Laugardalur valley for a swim in the outdoor thermal pool or take a walk in the botanical garden.

There are several museums worth visiting in Reykjavik, for example the National Museum of Iceland near the University, the National Gallery of Iceland near lake Tjörnin and the Reykjavik Art Gallery (includes 3 different collections).

A whale-watching tour from Reykjavik harbour is a wonderful experience: a trip out to sea to look at whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.
